The wealthy, self-absorbed eccentric Sissy Goforth has taken up residence on a secluded Mediterranean island where she dictates her memoirs, flied into rages and screams insults at her servants. Her health now failing she drinks, takes pills and has a doctor give her injections to ease the pain. Into her reclusive life comes a stranger who manages to climb to her villa and survive a guard dog attack before introducing himself as a poet. Though attracted by the visitor she soon discovers he has a reputation for appearing when wealthy women are about to meet their demise and is known locally as the Angel of Death.

self-indulgent best in a good vehicle
Burton and Taylor at their decadent, self-indulgent best in a good vehicle. Nicely packed.

Boomstastic
If you love Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in action in a quirky film you will love this! It came as a german DVD and was quite fiddly to find the English language version. Otherwise it was an excellent product which I would highly recommend.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR & RICHARD BURTON
I had not seen this Taylor/Burton film, thought would buy on a whim. I did enjoy the film very much. Also Elizabeth is very stunning in this. They still have that spark, but i thought it wasnt quite as good as some of their other films. But, however, i am glad i own it. It arrived fast & no problems.

BOOM banga bang bust,,,,,,
This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. Elizabeth Taylor looks beautiful and in her total prime but the acting and the storyline is terrible. Richard Burton and his acting talent and beautiful voice is totally wasted. Why they continued to make such arty-farty films that nobody liked or went to see is anyones guess; either that or the money they were offered was the incentive. It was endless and I was quite bored. I had seen it on its initial opening in London and now remember how bad it was then but had forgotten about it until now. If it had been any other stars I would have turned it off half way through and this is something I never usualy do. I even looked at the cover to see how long the film lasted to see if I could get through it. It wasnt as long as CLEOPATRAs originally showing, 4 hours but felt like it and more. I only bought the film because I collect memorabillia about THE BURTONS and that era, other than that I would not have even contemplated it.....For a massive fan of Dame Elizabeth, I can hardly believe I have written this critique but thats how I felt and honesty is honesty.....

Lousy transfer of beautifully photographed film!
I bought this utterly flawed but interesting Losey-opus a couple of months ago when it was released on DVD in Germany. Sadly, both image and sound were so bad that I got rid of it the next day. My hopes were high for this UK version, but to my great disappointment, I quickly noticed that here was exactly the same lousy transfer: dark, fuzzy, flat, pale, muddy sound, and so forth. What a pity! This is such a problematic film that demands a beautiful and well produced presentation, or it will be almost impossible to sit through.Yes, this copy I will keep, but I sure ain't pleased with it!

A very weird film but one for the collection!
Having just read the Richard Burton diaries I was keen to watch some of the Taylor/Burton films. had never seen this one, it is a bit weird, nice cameo from Noel Coward though, and enjoyable if a bit strange, in a Tennessee Williams sort of way...
