Q: Is it normal for the heel strap (the only non-adjustable strap) to be loose, or do you think I need a smaller size?

My heel strap is loose also. I ordered a 9, as I am an 8.5, and I think they are just too big. I have a lot of room in front of my toe and behind my heel. Also, there is a lot of excess strap hanging down from tightening the straps to fit. And, like I mentioned, the heel still feels too loose. I think hiking in these would be a trip hazard and also cause blisters from rubbing at the heel. I am in the process of returning the 9's and getting 8's. I will post how the fit is when I get them in.

Q: Do you have to adjust the buckle every time you put these on? (as opposed to the slip on old zong ecotreads?)

Yes. You have to loosen them to take them off, and tighten them when putting them on. They often tighten more as you wear them, so you can either adjust them or keep them as is if you are comfortable

Q: is the base of this chaco gray or black?

Hi there! They are a grey/brown color according to the photo.

Q: how are these for gripping slippery surfaces. I need a pair for climbing waterfalls

I have worn my Chacos climbing a cliff out of a Quarry, along with hiking; I thought traction was alright. Just make sure you have the toe strap so it feels more secure, and you don’t trip.
