Product Description Arriving like a comet, he danced on tables, drunk with passion for life and art and his ending was the tragedy of true genius like Van Gogh and Mozart. He was Modigliani. Paris 1919. Two men - artists, Amedeo Modigliani (Andy Garcia) and Pablo Picasso (Omid Djalili) have a bitter rivalry fuelled by brilliance, arrogance and passion. But Modigliani also has another passion in his life, Jeanne Hebuterne (Elsa Zlyberstein), a beautiful Catholic girl whose only fault in her father s eyes was to fall in love with Modigliani, a Jew. This is the remarkable story of Modigliani s brilliant but tortured genius and the great conflicts of passion he had to face. This is the true story of one amazing man and one of the greatest love tragedies in art history. Review Much like Modigliani s sculpture and painting, this film is a masterpiece... Garcia excels in the central role. --Film Is ArtAndy Garcia gives a fearless performance. --Eye WeeklyBoth beautiful and tragic. --Metacritic

Masterpiece!
This film is nothing less than a masterpiece in my opinion! It really fascinated me, not having any knowledge about Modigliano in advance. The acting is brilliant and the story masterly told. It is so gripping seeing how hard life was for this artist. But also interesting to witness the feud he and Picasso were having. Tragedy, love and rivalry are all themes in this film. Living in total poverty and having suffered great loss, one can wonder how anyone can survive and also stay sane. And perhaps it wasn't possible. The film is about Amedeo Clemente Modigliani's (July 12, 1884 - January 24, 1920) life as an artist in France in the beginning of the 20th century. He was an Italian artist of Jewish heritage and was practising both painting and sculpture. The film tells about his relationship with Jeanne Hébuterne who loves him so much that she can't live without him and because of that has to make inhuman sacrifices. And her father disapproves the affair so much that he commits unspeakable acts and makes their life even harder. It shows the rivalry between Modigliani and Picasso. And how he never in life gets the recognition he deserves, his disappointments and hopes to succeed. How he never gives up. And the tragic death of this great artist.

Modigliani - what a story!
When I know your soul, I will paint your eyes - the film Modigliani is one of the best love stories I have seen, however, it is rather the story of an incredible artist - Modigliani, a journey of discovery for me. During the late 19th century and early 20th, all artists flocked to Paris and virtually lived as a community, making art, talking art, living art - wonderful times it seems. Fascinated and respected by each other, yet rivals - Picasso and Modigliani had a very very special relationship - often their love and admiration for one another surfaces in the film. The beauty of these life stories, is that it encourages one to read more and know more of these great men who in many ways had impacted on each others lives, encouraged them to grater heights. Oh I loved this movie!

A Good Depiction of the Later Life of the Artist
Although the film is billed as fiction, and indeed some of it is, the main elements are very close to the actual later life of Modigliani. The rivalry between Picasso and Modigliani is clearly added to spice up the plot and is largely fiction. Andy Garcia looks like Modigliani and his acting is excellent as is that of many other members of the cast. The film depicts the last few tragic years of the life of the artist. Despite the reservations above, the film is well worth watching and compliments very nicely the current exhibition about the artist.

Superb film about Modigliani the Master
What a superb portrayal Andy Garcia was as Modigliani. Catching the duality of the artist where he was the showman and also the serious side where his art was his all.The self destructive side of his character was also portrayed and the ambiguity of his relationship with Jeanne Hebuterne.Great film really enjoyed it and the icing on the cake was the haunting music at the end of the film.Superb film.

Modigliani.
This film opens with a declaration that it is a work of fiction – it really should also carry an apology to all the artists and real-life characters depicted and to the viewer who may actually believe any of this tosh. It's a shame really; there's a good cast and the film is very nicely shot in atmospheric locations, but that's where any positive elements end – the story is total nonsense.Modigliani and Picasso were friends but never rivals; Modigliani died before Picasso was even an established artist. The premise of rivalry to the point of feud does neither artist justice, least of all Picasso; I felt sorry for Omid Djalili (a fine actor otherwise) who had to struggle with such a mean-spirited and untruthful portrayal by the dunce who wrote and directed this. The film is filled with anachronisms and blatant untruths – it really was a lost opportunity; the true tale of this remarkable artist and his lover/muse would not have been lacking in drama and tragedy - instead we have a muddled fantasy.A real stinker; the UK DVD has no English subtitles and (probably mercifully) no extras.

Elsa Zylberstein was brilliant as Jeanne -Modi's muse and wife to be
well.this really was a melodrama of sorts..the central theme of rivalry played out by the two antagonists..Modigliani ( Garcia) and Picasso (Djalili ) were quite unbelievable -really. This landscape was glazed with brushes of melodrama a les Miserables and Tosca and although it was moderately effective in this, it does make you wonder if all of the content could possibly be factual-you cant quite believe it! Djalili as Picasso-absurd! but as an uncritical movie it was quite ok for Djalili to play him..Elsa Zylberstein was brilliant as Jeanne -Modi's muse and wife to be. Worth watching

Beautiful
Beautiful, visually captivating though shocking. Almost dark, though a true story; not a film you can get up to make a cuppa in the middle of!
