Q: What is the length of the upcut portion? What depth do you have to make your first pass so that you don't get tearout on the top?

I use these bit regularly I do an initial 1mm pass on the top then 1.7mm pass then after. I would say the initial up cut portion is 8mm from tip

Q: Do they leave a smooth bottom finish on a pocket cut?

I've only done up to 3/8" pocket cuts, and they do leave a smooth bottom finish. Very pleased with the quality of these bits, they last a long time.
