The strap provides a perfectly secure hold during duck-diving, wipeouts and from wind. I have medium length hair, and when it's excessively windy outside, I pop this hat on and it keeps the hair out of my face.Don't worry about looking like a kook; hats are becoming more and more common and I value my skin over the opinions of others. I have been using this for sun protection while surfing. It stays on your head, even after being crushed by a six foot wave. The material quality is pretty good but not excellent.

The item is misrepresented in the photos. It does not have ear covers. Perhaps it will be a good hat, but that will require me to use it for a few weeks to evaluate its performance. The inaccuracy of the advertisement is very disappointing.
