Must read!
This book hits the nail on the head. Read this and make this the year that writing becomes fun for your students. So many factors are involved in making writers progress, and Ralph GETS IT! Comfort, confidence, choice, craft, and community are all vital ingredients. He addresses conferencing, revising/editing, and even assessment. โIf you want to ensure your young writers do not progress, grade everything they write.โ Portfolio conferences and student involvement in assessment are perfect solutions to our data-obsessed world.

Ralph Fletcher is always a good read. This is packed full of practical ways to support writers in the writerโs workshop. Fletcher knows how to balance skills, motivation and the joys of writing.

Good and quick read
This book was a really nice overview of some of the most important do's/dont's of Writer's Workshop. It was a quick read--read it in about two hours or so. It is written nicely--it flows well. A few sentences are in bold/highlighted to help readers who are short on time. I'm not sure its worth $30 (I was able to get through a FB group for about $10 which seems like an appropriate price). It has some great tidbits of advice as a "pep talk" for teaching writing. It does not have lessons on craft or very many explicit strategies for teaching writing. It is worth reading and revisiting when you needed a pep talk but skip it if you need real concrete strategies for planning a writing unit.

Making the rules and mechanics of writing interesting and imaginative
Although I teach adults writing, this book provides helpful tips and practical ideas for teaching writing to anyone. I particularly liked sections 14 through 20 on the writing workshop. The stages of writing and assessing and grading were useful also. I would definitely recommend this text for K-12 language arts teachers.

Useful
I have always done well with any Fletcher resource, including this one. This book is well laid out and very useful and easy to use and read. Great tool for organizing, setting up and implementing writing workshop. Even briefly addresses assessment and grading, which can be tricky with writing.
