I have owned a 8 pelt black sheepskin rug for 23 years that I and my dog love. I bought this one just for my 25 pound dog which she took to right away. Of course, in its newness it has a bit of the sheep smell. It’s not bad though. Initially, I left it outside for 2 days/nights to air it out. It’s sturdy and fluffy, don’t hesitate to buy.

Love it. I’ve always wanted one and I’d almost bought one on a trip to Ireland. This one was less expensive and I didn’t have to fit it into luggage! Very pleased with the color, thickness and softness.

I do tan hides, including sheep, but I bought this due to time contraints for a project I wanted to get going. I was dubious about other people's opinion over the smell, but MAN.. it does have a very very distinct ammonia smell. It has been pouring rain here so I have not taken it outside to air out in the sun as recommended by the company. But having been opened out of the package and sitting in a room, the smell is lessening (weeks). I have a few tricks I can use, but I have not gotten to them yet to reduce or eliminate the smell.Mine is real sheep hide. The wool is thick and for my project it will be perfect. The colour was as advertised.

Update to original review: seller has contacted me and provided the video and instructions for testing the authenticity of a sheepskin. I’m not planning to try to burn a piece of this item to prove to myself that it is in fact a sheepskin. So, I will accept at face value that it is authentic sheepskin.However, beyond that, my review stands as is. After days of airing the sheepskin outdoors in the sun, the strong chemical odor persists. I bought the skin to give my elderly dog a warm and cozy place to rest but she avoids it due to the smell.It looks and feels exactly like the faux rugs I’m seeing at the discount stores for $19.99. I’m really disappointed. It’s stiff, it’s not FLUFFY, and worst of all, it has a distinctly unpleasant chemical “shampoo” odor. The post says “no odor”. Not true. It smells bad.For the record, the color is as shown. Its a black tipped white fur and the one I received is generously sized.I have other natural sheepskins and this, if it is real, falls so far short of the quality of others I have as to be laughable.I purchased based upon the other reviews and I can only hope that whatever those folks received is better than what I got.I’m trying to air it out now. Hopefully the nasty odor will dissipate. (update: 4 days have passed and the chemical shampoo odor has not dissipated. 😖)I bought this as a cushion for my elderly dog; I’m so frustrated.Shipping it back is such an ordeal that I guess I’m more or less stuck with it. FYI, it must be shipped back in its original packaging. Well, since the sheepskin was wrapped in plastic and a mile of tape inside a box which was ALSO wrapped in a mile of tape, the only way to extract it was to cut it out; first the outer, taped box and then the inner, taped, plastic bag. There is no “original” package left in which to package a return. Without the original packaging I have to pay extra for the privilege of returning it.I can’t recommend this item and if there were a rating of no stars or negative stars, I’d have given it a less than one star for sure.

Though the cost, photos and some reviews are attractive, this is not a sheepskin you want in your home! Some reviewers mention the smell, but I mistook that for natural sheepskin odor and some processing residuals, WRONG! This has an acidic chemical odor that is quite overwhelming and terrible. When I opened the sealed plastic pouch with scissors, the smell caused my eyes to water. I quickly ran outside and flung the skin on to my deck railing. Now a month later, it was still too strong to keep in the house-like the chemicals used in hair perms back in the 70’s and 80’s. I have numerous sheepskins, and work with wool and fiber as a hobby. This is an over processed sheepskin that has lost much of its natural beauty and characteristics, and the smell makes it unusable in any way. I will spend a few more dollars and buy a skin from a country known for sheep and quality, safe processing. I am returning it.
