Q: is the cap stainless steel as well? is there any plastic?

The cap is composed of stainless steel and plastic. The portion of the cap which screws onto the bottle is stainless; the cap has a substantial plastic "plug" which seals the bottle. The plastic plug has a silicone plastic ring which seals against the stainless steel interior of the bottle. The silicone ring surrounds the edge of the plastic plug, leaving about a 1" diameter plastic portion of the plug showing itself to the interior of the bottle. The type of plastic is not listed in the product description, other than that it is BPA free.

Q: Had anyone had issues with water getting inside the lid where the black ring holding the strap sits?

I have not encountered that issue. There certainly were no leaking issues.
