Great hikers, Buy 1/2 size over!
I love the Altra Superiors. I have owned at least a dozen Altras. The Superiors have always run a half size small; even compared to other Altras. They are light and thin, almost like moccasins. I have used other light weight hikers, the Superiors are my favorite. If you are transitioning from more traditional Hikers, you'll want to transition to the thinner soles. They provide stone guard inserts to help you transition but I have never used them. They have great grip. I used to turn my ankles from time to time in sturdier traditional Hikers, even the mid highs. It's the heals and hard soles you can't feel what's under your feet. I haven't turned my ankles in years since I switched to Altras. With the Superiors, you are lower to the ground and can feel what you are walking on. I love the feel of the trail, even the rocks. My feet have adapted. I have hiked thousands of miles in them, from a 25 mile Rim-To-Rim, to 14ers.Oh, and I NEVER get blisters anymore. Now a couple of knocks, the rear foot on the Superior 5 is a kind of pleather. I liked the fully nylon mesh in the older styles. The Superior 2s were my favorite version. I am not a fan of the one sided wrapped tongue. It's not a deal killer and has some advantages but I liked the centered tongue better.Great shoes for a great price, (on sale).Happy Trails

This shoe saved me from my hallux rigidus arthritis !
For some reason this model of Altra runs very small- I have a pair of the Altra Lone Peak 6 and they are perfect in my normal size of 11. I had to return these Superior 5's for 11.5 and that was no different than the 11, so I had to get size 12 and that fits great.I have a type of arthritis in my big-toe knuckle where my toe connects to my foot that is very painful and I have not much mobility of my big toe on my right foot. This shoe with the nice wide toebox eliminated my pain! I am so thankful. The Lone Peak6 are almost as roomy as these and I can wear them also, but not for long walks/hikes like I can these.

Snug fit
I normally wear 12s, some things like skates or ski boots 11 or 10.5. Slippers maybe 13. I ordered size 12, but the right shoe is a bit short. Funny that the left shoe seems to fit okay. I'll need to exchange these because the toes on my right foot are scrunched up and pressing against the front.**Update: Painless refund, purchased the 12.5 and they've been great. If you've never worn these (as I never had either), putting on street shoes or non-zero drop shoes afterward almost feels like walking downhill. After a few days, I could feel my low back, hammy & calf muscles were getting a workout. For me and my back, that's great! The only odd thing, and I don't know if other shoe makers are doing this too, is the tongue is fixed to the inside of the inner side. Maybe I have big arches, but my laces at the top are always wide and this makes the tongue on these skew off-center and just looks odd. The tongue has enough material to cover to the other side, so that's not an issue. Just makes the shoe look crooked regardless of the bigger toe box.Have to wait to see how long these last. Replacing 18-year old Nike 'trail' mid-tops that I only wore while biking or in the gym. I had to reglue the sole 4 different times, but the uppers are still in 1 piece. I'd be shocked if these last 5 years.

Misleading color
I picked the green inside 10. I was wondering just how much green was in the shoe, because it didn't look like very much at all in the pic. I was right. The first pic for this color is wrong. It shows a grey and white version. OTHER, further pics show the true color. Beware. Otherwise it's a fine enough shoe. Just far too green for my tastes.

Very Comfortable! Unique treads
I love the comfort that Altra shoes offer with the wide toe cap and low profile heel/base. Sturdy shoe and I don’t worry about rolling an ankle. Came with pebble guard? Inserts that I do not use. What to know: these shoes have 2 materials - cloth top & vinyl/pleather on sides. Guessing for mud & water - not a bad thing & they blend well & very subtle, just hard to see in pictures. As trail shoes the bottom is like a knobby tire, almost like a turf cleat. Again very subtle & I think will be a bonus for my euro tour walks which I bought them for. The sole is a soft blue (not white) not ugly whatsoever & also subtle, just kind of different from what you expect to see vs. a picture. One reason I like this brand is because they have color tones that are not LOUD. These check that box. I bought size 12 and consider my shoe size an 11. I am finding this more common now a days. Strongly recommend

These are fantstic!
So I bought these looking for wide toe box and zero drop running shoes with decent tread for trail walking and a bit more cushion than something like Xero or Vivobarefoot. These are perfect! Walked all over Yosemite without any issues. Super comfortable and breathable, and I was honestly surprised how much I love these shoes! 10/10

Great zero drop shoe with grip
I have been running in barefoot style shoes for years and love the natural feeling and increased strength in my foot and legs as a result. I purchased these shoes to use as a zero drop option primarily for winter runs in snowy/ icy conditions.Id say I have a slightly wider than normal foot because my three middle toes are similar in length, and I have strong high arches. I usually wear a size 8.5US or a size 9US (Nike/ Saucony) depending on the brand, however recently I've been buying more shoes in size 9 to allow for a little more space in the toe box. I bought the superior in a size 9 and it fits great. It allows for a good amount of space in the toe box to let my toes spread but not so much that my feet slide around excessively. Despite having a wide toe box the toe box is a little shallow. Initially I was concerned about the toe guard potentially rubbing on my big toe when flexed but I didn't notice anything after a few runs and walking. If you're concerned you can always remove the additional rock guard insole for some more space. The shoe has a relatively low stack height and the foam is more on the firm side in my opinion which allows for good ground contact feel so don't expect a soft ride. There's a slight bit of arch support. With zero drop and the amount of cushion it would be a good shoe for people transitioning or for people who run in more minimalist shoes that want to give their legs a bit of a break. The traction lugs aren't super deep but traction was pretty good in snow and on trails. No real complaints. The upper is not waterproof. There is a mesh on the toe box that is stretchy and breathable. The rest of the shoe is covered in solid material that would resist water. Compared to traditional shoes there's a good amount of flexibility. One thing I have noticed when running in these shoes is that my Achilles gets tight and part way through the run I sometimes stop to give them a break and let them relax. After that the tightness usually goes away. I'm not sure if this is because of the shoe or not properly warming up before the run, however with my barefoot shoes like Merrell vapor glove and some water shoes I bought off Amazon I usually don't get tightness in the Achilles or it goes away after a km or so. I typically run 5 miles a day or 35 miles a week.Overall I'm happy with the shoe and think it's best for experienced minimalist runners who want a zero drop shoe with a little cushion to give their legs a break, or as a transition shoe for someone trying to run in more minimalist footwear. My only complaint with the shoe itself is it would be nice to have a waterproof version.

So far so good
Purchased a size 8.5 men’s, I’m usually an 8 so thought that with a wider toe box I’d be on the safer side. This was not the case, and the fit is borderline as there is not much toe space. Should mention this is my first pair of Altras, so not sure if this a general theme. Aside from that they are comfy and come with a second inner sole which I suppose might favour those who prefer less cushioning. I do own Merrel vapour gloves and and much prefer these for uneven terrain as they provide good support.
