Excellent Starting Point for AHA Peels - Must Be Used Properly for Best Results
I've been using both this gentle version of the Institut Esthederm AHA peel (containing 5% concentration) and its next-level stronger one (appropriately labelled 'intensive' at 12% concentration) and it is powerful stuff. Like many things, the devil is in the detail of how you use it.Whilst using the serum, you must avoid sunlight as it makes the skin hypersensitive. Of course, sun is never your skin's friend in terms of anti-aging (although it's 2018 and we're supposed to be phasing out that term, like Allure magazine has. But I digress...) It's best to apply a small amount at night. If you use the strong concentration before your skin is 'used' to it, it will become red and bumpy and you'll stop using it before the AHA has had the chance to work its benefits over the course of weeks. So it's best to ease into this regiment by starting with this gentle version once a day at night, and then advancing to the intensive, more potent version. If this is too strong, you can temper the serum creme with some simple Cetaphil or the like. The results for your skin are good, however, and are worth a little patience. The results are not a dramatic difference, but your overall skin tone does improve as the top layer of your skin is rejuventated over time. The bottle isn't too large but should last for a full month to month and a half of use given you should not use too much of it. It's not like a mask where you slather the lotion on.Institut Esthederm's products seem, without exception, to be excellent-quality skin care made with top ingredients. This Intensive AHA Peel is no exception. This is therefore recommended for a subtle but meaningful increase in skin's tone and appearance. Just be careful to not overdo it.

Improved my skin tone and helped fade acne marks
*IMPORTANT*If you are new to acids and peels, DO NOT USE THIS EVERY DAY! You have to build up your skin’s tolerance to strong actives like this AHA peel otherwise, you will likely experience redness, dryness and irritation after a few consecutive days of use. Always introduce AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic), BHAs (salicylic acid) and peels into your skin care routine slowly – apply it once every third day for a week or two and see how your skin responds. Then apply it every second day. It can take a month or more to build up to daily use.YOU MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN! AHAs like this Intensive AHA Peel make your skin sensitive and very susceptible to the sun’s damaging rays and in fact, will cause cellular damage and further aging and deterioration to your skin. If you add this type of product to your skin care routine you must also commit to wearing sunscreen everyday (at least SPF 30). If you discontinue use of this product for a week, you don’t have to worry so much about sunscreen.WAIT 15 MINUTES after applying this before putting on your moisturizer otherwise you can negate the effects. Acid peels like this work due to their low pH (around 2 – 4) compared to your normal skin’s pH level (around 5.4). You have to give this product time to penetrate and do its thing before applying a moisturizer that can neutralize the acid before it has time to work its magic. This Intensive AHA Peel is the gentle version of their concentrated AHA serum (5.5% VS 12%). It is excellent for those new to AHA or those with sensitive skin as it’s recommended to start at a lower strength to build up your skin’s hardiness before applying a higher % to acid-virgin skin. I have some old acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, large pores, oily skin and breakouts here and there, so I am pretty familiar with AHAs, BHAs, strong peels and retinol. This product will absolutely help if you suffer any similar issues as I do. It’s a chemical exfoliant which will help remove dead skin cells so you’ll notice a more even skin tone and a more glowing complexion. It also regenerates collagen thereby leading to younger looking skin. Those added beneficial side effects are just another reason why chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid are typically better for your skin compared to those harsh and abrasive physical scrubs that can cause micro tears in your skin. What I don’t like is the added fragrance! This type of product can already cause some irritation just for the acid strength alone and added fragrances are notoriously sensitizing and a major cause of irritation for those with sensitive skin. The scent is pretty strong and it does linger a while. If this was fragrance-free I would give it 5 stars in a heartbeat.== INGREDIENTS ==Aqua/Water/Eau, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Propanediol, Glycolic Acid, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Lactic Acid, Glycerin, Salicylic Acid, Arachidyl Alcohol, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer, Behenyl Alcohol, Fragrance (Parfum), Arginine, Pentylene Glycol, Rhamnose, Arachidyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium EDTA, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Propylene Glycol, Laureth-7, Tocopherol, Carnosine, Disodium Adenosine Triphosphate, Farnesol, Laminaria Digitata Extract.

Works very well - user must be careful
AHAs (Alpha hydroxy acid) have been around for quite some time but have increased in popularity recently as an alternative to a physical exfoliant. Like physical exfoliants, AHA products make your skin much more sensitive to the sun as the outer protective layer of the skin is reduced. It is very important to protect your skin from the sun after using AHA products by wearing sun screen and wide rimmed hats if spending a prolonged period of time outside. This particular peel has a moderate AHA concentration. It could be used as an entry point into AHA creams although lower concentrations do exist if you want to start with a less steep taper and work your way up. I used this on my skin ~2 times a week. I did use it at that frequency for about a month with promising results. My skin looks much smoother and my pores have shrunk. It certainly does have the potential to cause irritation or skin sensitivity issues but as long as used correctly, it works wonders. It does have a subtle but persistent scent that might bother those who are highly sensitive but it did not irritate me. Keep in mind that AHA is known to cause some flaking. If you notice flaking on your 2 or 3 use, it’s a known effect of AHA creams. It should not, however, cause a lot of irritation or sensitivity. It absolutely must be used in conjunction with sunscreen – I would go for 60 SPF. Great product if used correctly.
