It should, but it may have more of a compression feel depending on how bulky the coat is.

Q: Front pocket big enough for binoculars?

Unless they are some insanely big binocs, I would say yes. I usually have spare mags and ammo, gloves, hats, and candy bar stuffed in there with probably enough room for typical small hunting binoculars. This is a really nice vest. The only odd thing is the side entry, but this is what allows for all the nice pockets - especially the hand warmer slot behind the main front pocket.

Q: I see that only small is in stock. are they still making this vest? i bought one last year and love it! i would like to buy one for a friend xxl.

Q: with the cargo pouch on the back, could this also be used for upland bird hunting?

I believe so. I plan on trying mine for that purpose also. It's a nice vest. Not sure the cargo pouch is waterproof though. Could get messy possibly. Good luck.
