The Black Folder edited by Catherine Yronwode. Excellent!
"The Black Folder" edited by Catherine Yronwode is a great addition to the library of anyone interested in Hoodoo. There are several well known contributors to "The Black Folder". I can't mention them all in this review because there are so many but I am going to highlight a few chapters to inform the reader of some of the content.I was pleasantly surprised to see the chapter on "The Fortune Teller's Guide to Success" by renowned Texas psychic Valentina Burton. Burton expertly explains how to set up a successful business in the psychic field. Valentina Burton is a published author, gifted psychic and successful business woman. She may be a Texan but Oklahoma loves her too.Another chapter I enjoyed is, "Herb Use Methods for Kitchen Witchery" by Sister Robin Petersen. This chapter is on conjure cooking written by a multi-talented woman who has poured her heart and soul into the subject. Petersen goes into detail on the topics of Electuaries, infusions, tinctures, herb garnishes, blacking spices and sprinkling herbs. Nobody else can write as expertly on this subject than Sister Robin Petersen. Robin Petersen actually does what she writes about.A fascinating chapter titled, "Skull Sorcery: Using Skulls and Skull Candles" by ConjureMan Ali explains precisely about skull magic. He covers the historical aspect of Skulls and he also shows you how to load and work your own skull candle. ConjureMan Ali, a highly sought after reader, is the popular co host of the weekly Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour on Blog Talk radio.Another favorite chapter is, "Spirit Vessels and Spirit Traps" also written by ConjureMan Ali. CanjureMan Ali writes about benevolent and malevolent spirits. He also describes in detail about Spirit Vessels and Traps.Lou Florez wrote an excellent chapter on "Catholic Saint Packets for Love, Money, Blessings" Florez explains to you what a Saint is and goes on to discuss the difference between Catholic Saint packages from other spell containers. Lou then instructs you on how to choose which Saint to work with and he does so extremely well. Lou Florez is a natural born psychic and well-loved by all who know him.Deacon Millett wrote a chapter titled, "Sweet Spells for Love and Beauty". I loved this chapter! Millett is the published author of, Hoodoo Honey and Sugar Spells." Deacon Millett is a reader, worker, and an astounding astrologer.Elvyra Curcuruto-Love wrote on Labyrinths. I learned how to make a Labryrinth of my own by following Evyra Love's directions. Elvyra is a highly accomplished reader.Dr. E has an informative and correctly researched chapter on "Making Doll Babies For Ritual Use." I found this to be one of the best pieces on doll babies I've ever read. Dr. E. is top notch in his field!Khi Arman wrote on a popular topic, "Hands on Conjure and Blessing." Everyone should read this gem. Khi is fiercely talented.Miss Bri wrote an informative chapter on "Love Conjure" which covers the different areas of love work. She does an amazing job. If you need to know anything about love spells this is a great chapter for you.Auntie Sindy Toto and Susan Diamond wrote an intriging article on "Rose of Jericho: The Resurrection Plant" I learned things I never knew about the Rose of Jericho. Two gifted ladies in their fields.Lara Rivera's chapter, "Container Spells in the Hoodoo Tradition" is excellent because it is well written and it stays true to the subject of Hoodoo. Lara is the real deal and knows what she's talking about because she works it.There so many great chapters in "The Black Folder" that are truly inspirational and fascinating. There's even a chapter called "High Tech Hoodoo" by Kast Excelsior where the author tells you how to integrate new developments of Modern Lifestyle in one of the paragraphs. This topic is highly relevant and a must read by anyone who works in the magical arts.Catherine Yronwode has written a well researched introduction and also many chapters in the book. Mrs. Yronwode continues to be a pioneer in the field of Hoodoo as well as an exceptional author.I highly recommend this book for the beginner and for the advanced magical practitioner. If you want to know more about the readers in the book you can find them on AIRR, the Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers, on the Lucky Mojo Curio Co site.Thank-you to Catherine Yronwode and to all of the contributors to "The Black Folder, Personal Communications on the Mastery of Hoodoo."

Another Winner from Cat Yronwode
I could write alot about how much I liked the book and why, but I think the content speaks for itself. How to use Spiritual Oils and Sachet PowdersHow To Use Incense, Bath Crystals and WashesHoodoo Perfumes and IncensesThe Art Of Hoodoo Candle MagicCandle Burning Basics (the candle stuff is good for me because I have yet to bring myself to buy a book JUST about candles except how to make them of course)Divination Signs From Burning CandlesSome Thoughts About Candles (trimming wicks and such)Oil Lamps in History and Voodoo (Finally, someone who shares my belief in lamps over candles...they're just more practical in my opinion)Rustic Hoodoo Oil LampsMojo Hands for Money, Love and Legal Work (mojo or gris gris bags)Mojo BagsCatholic Saint Packets For Love, Money and Blessings (something for you christians)Making Doll Babies For Ritual Use (Favorite #1)Bottle and Jar SpellsContainer SpellsSpirit Bottles and Spirit Traps (personal favorite of mine and colleagues)Skull Sorcery (OOOoooOOoOOoOOooh)Herbs And Kitchen WitcheryGrocery Store Magic (?)Nordic Bread Spells (very interesting, old time wooden stove lore stuff, hard to find or at least I've never seen it before in any of these "Nordic" magick books)Moon Phases (very useful and simple "telling" method, I was thinking "why didn't I think of that?" while reading)Between pages sixty four and sixty five there is a back and front COLOR picture of "drugstore" ads from the early 20th depicting astrology and zodiac. She's right, new agers, theres nothing new about what your doingAstrology (very good, and Im not into astrology AT ALL)Tea Leaf Reading (man, Cat sure loves her tea...leaf reading)Bone Reading (her book "Throwing The Bones" is good too.)Create Your Own Divination DeckFortune Telling as a Career (interesting)Spiritual Foot WashingThe rest of the pages 85-123 are spells and charms for love, money and business, (gambling) luck and court cases with a few curses thrown in for good measure.Crystal Silence League (inspiring)Saints for Occupations and Conditions (thats a BIG list)LabyrinthsHigh Tech HoodooEach section is about 1-3 pages long, some even longer. As you can see that is a lot of content and it is a large book (length and width the size of a real folder)definitely worth the money. I love books like this, and they are so rare. You get alot and you learn alot. Lots of ideas and there is something for everyone. Top shelf material in my library of over 1000 books.

If you’re searching for folk magic, you’ve come to the right book.
Straightforward and no-nonsense! This is a fascinating book filled with tons of information. I was on the fence about getting it for a long time, but finally took the plunge when I needed something to push me into free shipping territory. You know how it goes. Anyway, this is a great book with tons of practical, everyday magic. The author starts by giving a detailed history of how the book came to be. I have just started to delve into the meat of the book but appreciate the straightforward manner it which the info is presented. I also appreciate that this started as a grass roots publication completely produced by the people who wrote the pamphlets.
