He prefers the beef flavour
We’re back on the Royal Canin Renal food again with our second CKD cat, Mackay. He is quite advanced in his CKD, down to 2.8kg from >7kg at his prime :( at this stage our priority is keeping him as well as possible but ensuring he still enjoys life, rather than trying to stick to a rigid regime as he’d stop eating altogether with plain renal food. Btw, he prefers the beef flavour over tuna or chicken but we mix it up occasionally. Our solution has been to properly mash the renal food with a fork and mix it with some baked cod and a little bit of tuna or sardines for flavour (in sunflower oil or spring water, never brine). We use a phosphorus binder (Ipakitine, available on Amazon). For his first meal of the day we mix in some slippery elm to aid his digestion (also on Amazon) and ~6 peas to encourage bowel movements. Slippery elm shouldn’t be given with any other meds or supplements as it can prevent proper absorption for a couple of hours. We find he is more inclined to drink water if we add massive ice cubes to his bowl, otherwise he’ll only drink from the tap - avoiding his luxury fountain, of course! We are currently dealing with constipation which is common in CKD cats. We’re trying Lactulose (vet recommended and used before) but this never seems to work for long and it’s pretty sticky, a nightmare in fur. The best solution we’ve had (for severe constipation) in the past is glycerin suppositories *for babies* - also on Amazon! Not pleasant, but it works.Final little tip would be to invest in Oralade (ALSO ON AMAZON). Our previous CKD, hyperthyroid cat had a few “crashes” in his last year where he was on the verge of death, not eating at all and barely functioning. Horrendous. The Oralade got him through those moments until he bounced back. It can be given via syringe, hydrates and offers basic nutrition. Get it in advance so it’s ready when you need it.To all the CKD carers out there - good luck! It’s a tricky, painful and confusing journey, never knowing what’s best or how our furballs are really feeling. Just do what you feel is best and know that if you’re spending time on here, reading reviews about renal food, you’re a loving owner and they’re lucky to have you.

Not for fussy pussies.
My cat wouldn't eat it so I had to revert to her old catfood
