Very fragile...do not buy them if you intend to touch them
I just received a replacement shipment since the pastels in my first shipment were crumbled. This replacement shipment was just as bad. These sticks are way to fragile to even touch with normal force. it's unfortunate because the colors appear to be rich and useful. I did some testing with the tiny fragments I could pick up and the pigments go down smoothly...If you could get them out of the box even in pieces 1/4 of stick they might be fun to use. I might be able to salvage a few useful fragments out of this box. I would not recommend buying these from anywhere that ships the product. If you can find them in a store that might work.

Inferior to the original Yarka Sauce.
Cheap low quality pigments. Description says “Not your child’s crayons.” In my opinion, they are lower quality. I have used the original Yarka Sauce (made in Russia.) These are made in China. I would not buy again unless it was made in Russia.

Sidewalk chalk?
I like the selection of colors and the cute little box. All but one stick was broken. Not a big deal for me because I’m going to break them anyway, but if you are giving it as a gift the presentation is not pretty.I had never tried these before and wasn’t sure what to expect...I was surprised that they are super gritty and very similar to sidewalk chalk. They are so rough they scratched my paper

Do not buy this from Amazon
These soft pastels are wonderful. However, soft means fragile. Both deliveries gave me broken and damaged pastels. Buyer beware.

Chalk-charcoal cross for sketching
Russian "sauce" are pastel crayons that are a cross between something like a Conte crayon and pastel chalk. The colors are shades of grey, brown and bluish grey and white. They are made of Chasov Yar clay and industrial carbon. You get ten color-- Black, Gray, Light Gray, Brown, Gray-Green, Gray-Azure, Warm Gray, Ochre, Bistre, and White. These come in a wood slide box that does nothing to protect them from damage. Mine arrived broken in a lot of pieces, so I have small stubs to draw with; not happy about that. Harder to hold. There are some great examples of Russian sauce sketches if you do a web search. The effect is very good for shading and you can get some deep darks as well as delicate shades. Try these on tinted pastel paper.

Not the quality of Russian pastels, made in China
I’ve purchased this exact set years ago and still have them although well used. First picture is the new ones. I had to press and twist several times to get it to lay. Chaulky, smaller, and smell is so strong of some chemical making them unusable. Very sad I can’t get the quality of the big, buttery pastels from russia anymore. Second Picture are my old pastels. They barely touch the paper and see how it lays, so buttery and the experience in working with them is amazing. This new maker is not worth trying. China? Why do that? Blew it.
