Dubious about this food, but actually...
Let me begin by providing some background by saying that I like to feed by dog top quality food where possible. The only problem is that Loki (the pup) is very fussy and it is a struggle to get him to eat as much food as he needs.Anyway, we were sent a free bag of Lifelong to try and I was dubious at first. Looking at the ingredients, this is not something I would ordinarily feed as there is not nearly enough meat content in my opinion. When looking at ingredient lists, you can tell a high quality food by whether the first three ingredients that are listed are meat. Lifelong's main ingredient is rice, which is a good carb source (cereals are bad, rice is good), but ideally I would want a much, much smaller level of carbohydrates in my dog’s food. Also an issue for me is that the meat content listed is Turkey meal. While ground up turkey carcasses are not too much of an issue, I would like to see some level of 'real meat' in the ingredients. Also not ideal is the sodium chloride listed in the ingredients - I would rather no added salt. Without going too in depth, I would say this food is just slightly better than James Wellbeloved, which puts it as an average dog food (for this I would award 3 stars). Now to the good stuff. My dog has always had a sensitive tummy and has suffered from the foulest smelling wind from day 1. I thought the raw feeding would clear this up, but even that made no difference. I started feeding some Pooch and Mutt digestion aiding treats out of desperation relatively recently and they seemed to make a small difference, but since feeding this I've barely noticed even a slight whiff coming from his backside. While this food might not be of the high quality meat content I would want, I can definitely say that it seems to have really helped with my dog’s digestion and he no longer produces foul smelling farts every 5 minutes. This is probably down to the mostly natural, gentle ingredients, with additions like Yucca and Lucerne. Not only that, but we are nearly two weeks into feeding this food and Loki is still happily finishing up his daily allowance (new food is usually exciting enough to be eaten for the first three days or so and then it is generally ignored). He's even excited to have his bowl filled in the morning, which is so unusual for him. The biscuits are nice and small and not too hard, which I think helps him as he's quite a small dog and sometimes seems to struggle with larger/harder kibble. His coat is still lovely and soft and shiny (something I was worrying about with feeding what is a lower quality food in my opinion). Worth noting is that I have every now and again supplemented with some Nature's Menu pouch food to maintain a good quality, high meat intake so I cannot say that feeding this food exclusively would maintain a healthy coat. The ingredients such as fish oil and linseed are good for this though. So to conclude, I am awarding 4 stars overall because of how Lifelong seems to have helped with my dog’s digestion and also the fact that he seems to really like it. For the food quality itself I would probably have awarded 3 stars. This is by no means a bad food (far better than the likes of Bakers or Pedigree, which should be banished from the shelves), but it could be better. If lifelong brought out a similar food with a higher meat content, I would be 100% sold. I will continue my search for a higher quality food that works for my dog, but I may end up revisiting this brand as it seems to agree with Mr. Loki.

The heir of the dogma
I'm amazed at some of the other reviews here. Dogs with sensitive stomachs, dogs who are fussy eaters, dogs whose farts smell 'rotten', and so on. We truly project ourselves and our idiosyncracies, not to mention our self diagnosed specialness, on these beautiful, but hapless, pets.Fussy eaters, be they children or dogs, are not born - they are made. Plus, your own farts smell rotten. As to my dog - a wonderful, well tempered, field type cocker spaniel - well, she's nearly 8 now, and in the whole of her life she has never failed to polish off quickly whatever I put in her bowl and set down. The result? Gleaming black coat, a perfect 13 kilos, a cocked head when spoken to, her eyes ablaze with curiosity and intelligence. There is nowhere for a rabbit to hide once she sees it.So, she scoffs this food just as she scoffs every other food she has ever tried. My preference for her remains Hill's Science Plan, but this compares very well. It isn't bulked out with grain, rice is the biggest constituent, and some might prefer more 'meat'. Turkey here is 26%, which isn't bad. The other ingredients are top notch too, so you can see why this stuff isn't cheap.Despite what some reviewers claim about various brands of dried food, these 'top end' ones can't be that different. Lotte (my spaniel) has seen many come and go in her life, and she hasn't, so far, expressed a hankering for any particular one over all the others. As long as the quality is good her approach seems to be that there are rabbits and squirrels to be chased. One thing I do like is a resealable bag, and this one endeavours, with not quite 100% success, to be so.The other thing to say is that it's not a good idea to feed only dried food. Elvis may never have tired of hamburgers, but a dog is very likely to be more intelligent than he, so a bit of variation, especially if it involves what you're eating yourself, will help satisfy any curiosity they may have as to what they are 'missing'. Lotte's breakfast tomorrow morning, for example, will be the remains of the fish suppers we had for tea tonight. We all like a bit of a treat now and then.

No upset tummys so far!
Got a 2.5kg Turkey & Rice bag free with a promotion through Amazon when buying dog toys. Skeptical at first as our dogs are already on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic dry dog food to treat IBS and Colitis. They devoured it, which probably has something to do with the fact they've had the same food for the last 2 years! They've continued to like it though and so far so good, no upset stomachs. They've been eating it for about 3-4 weeks now and I would like to order some more in different flavours but they only have them stocked in the 15kg bags. Will probably swap my Subscribe and Save order to this as it's about half the price of our current dog food but still keeps them healthy. We have 3 Jack Russells between 5-7kg, so by the feeding guide they should be eating 100-225g per day. We've tried this at the lower amount (i.e. 300g between them per day) but this was too much and they didn't get through it all. This could be seasonal as probably less active at the moment but we are feeding them about half of the recommendation and they aren't going hungry. Overall, pleasantly pleased with the product and happy to have some additional choices so that the dogs don't get bored.
