Is the film that covers the photos safe for long term photo storage?

NO! Plastic covering/contact with photos is catastrophic over time. The plastic forms a chemical bond with the emulsion on the surface of the photo and adheres tightly. Any effort to separate them is rarely successful and usually causes -- at the very least -- partial destruction of the photo. This process releases an acrid smell which is persistent. Has anyone else had this experience? How can photos be preserved WITHOUT plastic.? That is my question.
