I don't see any clips on this unit. Do you just screw it into the drywall and it stays?

I screwed it into the metal flange at the end of my duct.

is there a key to open/close that goes through the diffuser?

Yes there is a key that comes with the diffuser !! I got 3 or 4 of them . They are quality built . They helped so much at balancing the flow to each room
