As A Tai Chi Quan Teacher with over 24 Years of Experience, I Can't Recommend This Book Enough
Waysun Liao has written a true classic. Please ignore the one-star review. Master Liao is teaching the deeper levels of Tai Chi Quan practice in this book. It's not an MMA manual. Actual Tai Chi Quan is a grappling art that contains all aspects of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts: Ti-Kicking, Da-Striking, Na-joint locks, and Shuai-Wrestling. People who don't know this don't know Tai Chi Quan aka Grand Ultimate Fist or Boxing.Waysun Liao is focusing on the Psychoenergetic aspects of the art in this book, which is rarely taught these days. He teaches all of the expressions of Nei Jing aka Internal power. He teaches how to properly breathe to accumulate internal power and move it. For these things alone this book is a must-have for the true Tai Chi Quan practitioner, researcher, and student.Once you use the enclosed exercises to accumulate Internal power, you can use it for any style you do.Get this book and the Way of Energy. learn a solid pre-Cultural Revolution style that still has its martial mechanics in it, like Grandmaster Liu Yuan-Chiao's Wutan system. Practice for 5 years. You'll be stronger, healthier, and fitter than the majority of people that you run into, especially if you're older. Most fighters won't be able to handle you.And men, moderate your leakage. This is a major secret to accumulating real power.Again, buy the book. Most people these days don't know what they're looking at, even when it's staring them in the face. Don't make that mistake. Cheers!

Great resource for gaining a deeper understanding of your Tai Chi practice.
It has a useful introduction to the history and philosophy of Tai Chi, chapters dedicated to the explanation and understanding of the concepts of Qi and Jing, 3 famous treatises on Tai Chi translated very well into legible and understandable English, and a very thorough explanation of the 37-Form Meditative Movement set, with illustrations. As a beginner in the world of Wushu and Tai Chi, I've found this to be a great companion to my regular classes, providing me with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the practice. I'm sure I will be reading and re-reading the treatises and the Qi and Jing chapters often. They seem outlandish and hard to believe at first, but take it with an open mind and a metaphorical/philosophical outlook and you will find wisdom. Since I am just beginning to learn the Yang-style 24-Form in class, the longer 37-Form set in this book, which is derived from both Yang and Chen styles, is something I have to look forward to, and to work towards. If you're interested in more than just exercise from your Tai Chi practice, definitely consider this book.

essential reference book; not a training manual
This is an excellent book that helps explain more deeply the information one might gather elsewhere on the internal martial arts journey. As one reads other books, trains, or otherwise learns, the information in this book will click and become useful.I do not recommend it as an intro to T'ai Chi. I think it would be too confusing. I actually recommend YouTube for that.

Only for those really into Tai Chi
It does give you some incite to the discipline. For those interested you will still need guidance from an instructor. Keep in mind rotation and transition, you can't do both simultaneously.

The secret awaits eyes unclouded by ambition
Great explanation of Jings! There are secrets in this book but they will be missed by many who don't have enough of a background to appreciate them. This took me to a new level many years ago when I first read it. The problem is you kind of have to know the secret to understand what he is talking about so without a solid foundation or teacher to discuss it with it, this book will go over many people's heads. Condensing the breath chi gung is VERY transforming and for those who don't get...lolz! Pearls before Swine. I give this book as a gift to my students when they are ready for it.

Tai Chi and Taoism
Just what I was looking for: a great book illustrating the relationship between the practice of Tai Chi and the philosophy of Taoism.
