A Book Worth Reading
With such a vast history, reading about China in a way that both emphasizes important details and is formatted in a an enjoyable, engaging manner can feel like a daunting task. Doing so need not be, however, especially with "Chinese History: 500 Interesting Facts about China."This book includes, as its title explains, precisely 500 different details about the numerous people, places, events, and beyond of China. Consequently, this work is accessible, fun, and worth reading.

Just the facts!
This book is somewhat interesting if you are interested in China. I am and it was full of facts but my only problem is that it reads like the high points of a Chinese history book but without the interconnecting information that puts it all in context. I found myself lost at times because between one fact and the next I felt like I was missing something important. Still interesting though.

- but needs some tidying up?
The book is 500 briefly described 'facts' with superfluous introductions and odd words in bold. There is a tendency to be repetitious (for instance: tea drinking seems to become common several times) and contradictory (369 states that the Empress Dowager CiXi 'came up with ideas of how to make China strong once more'; then 372 states that she 'clung to old traditions … not to reach full potential', etc…).Then, there's the occasional statement like: 476 'Some analysts believe it will take over the US in about a decade.' Surely, that should be 'overtake' rather than 'take over'?There's nothing about Mao and the 'Long March' … or the current leader?Seems to be the result of considerable research - but needs some tidying up?

Great for kids and adults!
Brilliantly laid out and really helped keep in my brain which dynasties were which. Beautiful pictures includedThe only thing I would have liked would be more pronunciation guides.
