Q: How do you wash this?

I wash this pad in warm water. I place it in the dryer afterwards. I use regular detergent and fabric softner.

Q: Can you put in dryer?

No, never in the dryer, might get damaged.

Q: what is the top layer made of?

Not certain. It is quilted and feels like a cotton blend.

Q: Would these work as luggage mats at the end of a bed? Or would they wear out quickly?

I don't use them for luggage. I use them as a pet cover for the couch or bed. I own 6 of them. Best to hang them to dry so they last longer. They are higher quality then the white washable pads. I wash them daily and they haven't had any issues with wear or tear.
