Great Whistle - Loud - See Best Uses Recommendations
I coach a couple sports at a high school and put this to use the same day it arrived. This whistle is very loud when close to it. It carried well in the football stadium as I guided team players thru conditioning drills. It was comfortable in my mouth after attaching the rubber teeth guard. We also had a bit of rainfall (just barely above freezing) and the whistle performed well and due to its design I didn't have to worry about getting it wet.BEST USES:This whistle seems more designed for things like water sports, life guard duty and other activities where you might encounter water or rain (a rainy day whistle). The color also allows it to stand out in water or in emergency situations. The traditional whistle with the ball inside will not work reliably if wet, but this one will. So the best uses for this design seem to be:- Swimming / water polo / etc- Life Guard duty- Survival / Camping / Hiking- Skiing / Snowboarding- Snowmobiling, ATV, or other recreational vehicle excursions- Personal Protection / Warnings- Rainy days while coaching/ref'n other outdoor sports (the ball type whistles can be problematic if theyOther Very Good Uses:- coaching & ref of other outdoor sports.Note: I did not try this inside a gym (basketball/volleyball) setting, so I cannot speak as to the quality in an indoor court side setting.Cons (or differences more likely):Sounds different than the metal whistles with the little ball inside. So if you really like that sound (sound snob?), it will take a while to get used to this one. I was good with it but did notice the little difference in the sound between this one and the other whistles on the field.Without the tooth guard, it is not that great of a feel to me but it does have a notch to help keep in your mouth if gently biting down.If you chew on your whistles, I'm not sure how long the slip on guard will last since it's not really a chew toy grade protector -- not really a con for me as I don't try to have a second lunch comprising of a whistle sandwich. What looks like a carrying case really isn't one once the guard is put on the whistle. It doesn't fit once attached. I hung one up for almost daily use at practices and the second one went into the bag it came in and I will put it with our hiking/camping/sports gear as it is great for that purpose.Pros:- Loud.- Lasts for the duration of your breath into it.- The protective guard makes it feel better in my mouth and less slippery so to say.- Don't have to worry about it getting wet at games or practice -- Best for water sports, rainy days, personal protection, and misc outings where you might encounter water or an emergency.- Great value and price!Bottom Line:I would definitely buy this again if/when I need more whistles!

Good for emergencies, missing some description details
Decent whistle, seems durable.I was a little confused about the extra pieces it came with. I looked at other similar whistles and it appears to be something you can install on the mouthpiece of the whistle, made of a pvc material in order to protect the teeth and lips. Though, there was no mention of this in the description and not shown in the photos. I included photos of how it should be installed on the whistle. Both whistles come with a lanyard which is handy. I plan to keep one in my kayaking pack and one in my hiking pack. I think it’s especially handy for kayaking, when you’re out with other motor boats, sometimes it’s hard to see a kayaker, so this could be a life saving tool.At $5, free delivery (I made sure to order a few other items so it wasn’t the one thing being delivered), seems like a good enough deal.I do wish it came with a couple more whistles to give the kids and keep in other areas for emergencies, but it’s a good start. I plan to wash these with soap and water before putting them in my mouth, I also wish there was more information about the material used (BPA free?).I’m taking 1 star off due to missing these details from the description, including not explaining how to use the included mouthpiece or what material it’s made from. Ultimately, it’s for emergency use, so I don’t plan to have it in my mouth regularly, but I definitely would want to know that information if I was using it as a referee or lifeguard.

Shrill!
Way back in the late 80's or early 90's I used to referee local rugby games, and I needed a whistle. I bought a whistle that was a relatively new design back then that didn't use a pea. The whistle had a shrill sound that really got your attention! Well I don't want to say that these are a cheap knock off, but I will say that these whistles show a pretty strong lineage to those, and they are way cheaper! I just checked for the original whistle and it's about 4x the price of this one. This one is just as shrill and loud, and as a schoolteacher I can tell you that it can he heard all the way to the other side of the courtyard, and the kids know immediately who is calling because I”m the only one with a whistle that sounds that way!If I was still refereeing every weekend, I might buy the more expensive brand, but for what I'm using it for, this is a very good and very cheap alternative.

Passable plastic noisemakers
These whistles are fine for what they do, which is to make noise. I don't know how their acoustics work, but it seems blowing into them results in a breathy shriek more than a clear and piercing signal. For a small, plastic trinket, that's probably fine. I wouldn't use it to get someone's attention in a noisy environment, though.

Nice little whistle for great price
Former referee chiming in here, know a little about whistles. But these are pretty much exact clones of the old fox 40 whistles I used to 20 years ago (which they still make!).But the tone is higher pitched, they cut through the air well. Hit it like you mean it and everyone is going to hear you.You can control the sound just like the original. And the added rubber guard is good for those of us that like to hold the whistle betw6oir teeth without marking up the whistle itself with too marks.Overall for a quarter the cost of other whistles, I'd definitely buy these again if I ever lost these two. Perfect the the up and coming coach or new referee.
