Super Self: Doubling Your Personal Effectiveness

A different look at finding a realistic purpose on life
I read this book years ago, and am so grateful for the lessons it taught me. Not rocket science, just helpful advice and direction. Charles Givens has a fresh and dynamic approach to finding your way in life. I have just ordered a copy for someone who's going to retire and needs some direction and planning.

A blueprint for success
Prior to this book, I enjoyed reading inspirational books such as Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" and "Ask and it is Given". Law of attraction as stated in those books made sense, but they were missing the actual blueprint or a method of putting life into action. SuperSelf, by Charles Givens, is the book that fills this gap. Also, his ideas are supportive of "LOA" and I can see why he was rich, monetarily and family-wise.Charles Givens writes and stresses that planning your life is the only way to success. Having a definite blueprint allows you to manifest your dreams. He also tells you how to do this using 5 sections. These sections are Dreams, Goals, Values, Action Plans, Daily Plans. First, you write out the dreams you wish to fulfill, no matter how big. Then you create a dated goals list to bring yourself closer to a selected dream. The action list allows you to accomplish the goals using small steps. Values are perhaps the most important concept I realized from this book. He teaches that money without the fulfillment of ones values such as being close to kids, family, wife, hobbies, is not the goal to a happy life. He stresses to make goals while consulting your life values. (this is so important because there are many rich people, who are poor in their married lives or are constantly stressed. After reading his ideas, I've put his method into action. I bought a three ring planner (Dayrunner Pro). I put in the five sections into my planner and wrote them out to my desires. So far, I feel my life is more planned, less stressed and I'm having one of my dreams come to a reality. If you're a person who feels time flies and its out of your control, this book would help you realize the potential of your time. I've also recommended this book to a close friend and have bought it for a family member for their birthday. In my opinion, this book offers a blueprint for an effective life.

*** Good Advice is Timeless ***
Even though he died in 1998, everything in this book is still valid. From little simple tips like allowing a little extra time to get somewhere to making sure you have gas in your car so you won't forget to put some in when you are rushed to controlling phone call interuptions this book is chock full of little tips.Even things like putting your keys in the same spot to having your doors keyed to use the same key, he just keeps on offering ways to save time and hassle that you can avoid if you listen to him.One of the pioneers of real estate infomercials, he speaks to you on how to enjoy your life.Shortly before he died he was sued with frivolous lawsuits, so ignore the ignorant reviewers that talk about that. He set up his estate so they couldn't touch his wealth. Good for him. Glad to know Givens kept his money shielded from buzzard lawyers.Learning how he overcame a hard childhood to go on to live a life most would only dream of should inspire you to do the same. All in all, a good combination of both inspirational reflecting on his growing up to practical advice once he had made it as an adult.

Easy to read but overall disappointing
Overall, I found the book just "OK". It is easy to read, which is nice. However, my biggest gripe with the book is that it is written with a business executive or corporate manager in mind. A lot of the tips and techniques refer to how to schedule meetings, how to setup your business phone lines, faxes, etc. These are practical tips, but not really useful for the casual reader. Furthermore, he recommends installing a phone in your car and using it everyday during your commute. Two things on this: First off, it's dangerous to talk and drive on the phone. Secondly, this factoid from the book highlights how old the book is, as nowadays we all have cell phones. The first portion of the book I found useful, but honestly this information is similar to almost every other self-help book. The idea is that you need to list your goals, your values, etc. and figure out ways to achieve them. This is very solid advice, but this is a large portion of the book. I was expecting a little more for a book so highly rated. The last half of the book contains practical but entirely useless tips (like changing your locks so you only need 1 key, arranging other people to pick-up and deliver your dry cleaning, limiting checking your messages 2x per day, etc.). Again, these tips are more for the business man than the casual reader.Overall, it gets 2/5 stars because it does contain some good points on "living in the moment" and "letting go of your failures". Those portions in the beginning are decent, but the rest is total fluff in my opinion.

Favorite Self Help Books
By far one of my favorite 'self-help' books... If you find yourself a bit confused in life and not sure what paths to start walking, this is a great book for you! (albeit a bit outdated... fax machines and stuff!.. haha) I generally read it once a year or so and would never live somewhere without it nearby.Unfortunately, it's not easy to get, and as far as I'm aware, a digital copy of the book doesn't exist yet.
