First, it is a good idea to mod these to use an internal air stone. Use snips of some kind (like small side-cutters) to cut space on the inside, then attach a small air stone (0.6" cylinder worked for my "small" sized filter) inside the filter from the cap using the tubing. Doing this will make the filter create finer bubbles, providing better filtration and less water surface disturbance. It will also quiet the bubbling from the filters down quite a bit.Sponge filters are great all-round filters, and work well for fish that don't like movement (like Bettas). You need an air pump and airline tubing to use them, though. They won't flood the ground around the tank like other types of filters, and they don't really break (air pumps do, though). They are a little unsightly and harder to hide than some hang-on-back filters, but not impossible.This particular sponge filter is about as good as any other, with some caveats. Some aquarium experts recommend larger, open-cell sponges for their filters, which will clog up less than the fine closed-cell sponge on this filter. Because of this design, you will need to clean this filter more often than you otherwise might need to. It does work, though.Also, this filter is not quite weighted as much as it should be. Even when fully soaked, it's a little too buoyant. A good sponge filter should sit comfortably on the bottom of the tank.Do not ever replace the sponge, by the way. To clean it, you pull it out of the tank and squeeze it out gently in the old tank water during a water change. The sponge may last years, and will harbor beneficial bacteria for your tank. If you replace it, you will mess your tank up. To replace a filter with another, you want to run the old one alongside the new one for a least a few weeks to help the bacteria colonize the new one.

If you are considering purchasing this product for your aquarium.... out of the box, absolutely! I cannot speak for longevity as I've just installed it in my 5 gallon betta tank today, but I am disappointed to of not seen this deal sooner- as I've wasted my time with an expensive sponge filter that left me defeated. Product feels good to hold, it has some weight, feels of the same quality as an expensive sponge filter, EASY TO INSTALL. Does not have to be disassembled to be put in tank. Connects to top hole of filter, slap it in the tank and begins working immediately. I am satisfied.

These are small, weighted to prevent floating, and the perfect size for a ten gallon aquarium. The price was a great value and they are easy to install. I bought extras hoping I could modify them and add air stones, but they're probably too small to fit the airstones I'm trying to use. I'm not disappointed - these are simple, easy to clean and great to use for a healthy tank!

These are pretty standard sponge filters. Operate and function like all others and work just as well. My only complaint is they use a smaller diameter tubing for the airline so they have an adapter at the ends to fit standard size. I would have preferred they just used standard-sized airline tubing because, after a few times of taking it on/off my gang valve, it started to leak air from the adapter. Other than that, GREAT for nano tanks, its very low profile, and is easy to hide.

While visiting a fish store, saw they use this type of filter, so found these on Amazon. They were inexpensive and the size needed for my 5.5 gallon tank. Came 3 in the box. The foam is 2 1/4 inches across by 2 inches high. Set one up in the tank. Even though they tend to float, I used a air tube suction holder on the air tube close to it to hold it in place. Been running now for about a week and a half. I am surprised just how clear and clean it keeps the water. Supposedly it's good for a year also befor changing or cleaning. They filter the water, come apart easily, go back together without breaking.I have had them a while now and feel confident in these sponge filters.I always end up with a guppy over population and use these to supplement the HOB filter.

The media could not be loaded.  So Happy with this purchase for under $10.00 (3 filters). Priced in pet store for over $20.00. These are extremely well made and work fantastic. Well weighted just squeeze sponge to absorb water to add more weight and sink. My Betta Fish is a real happy little guy with his fresh filtered water. Looks great and not sloppy and gross like other filters. Buy and you won't be sorry.

The media could not be loaded.  This is a great filter, it keeps my tank PRISTINE and I love that it's small enough to hide behind some of my plants and you can't even tell it's there! It's super easy to set up, you just attach the piping material and connect that to the pump and boom, you've got a filter. Very beginner-friendly.
