Would this replace a whale high flow pump, for use with a truma crystal 11 socket??

A bit late with the answer, but no, the pump will move water but with nothing like the pressure of the more expensive version.

can I connect a standard hosepipe to this?

You can connect standard hose to this pump. You may need a hose clip, don't overtighten it.

Inside the wire sheath, is there a blue and brown wire?

From memory the answer is yes re colours of wires. The pump worked fine for me. You do have to fit the old plug onto the new pump if using as a replacement for an external water pump for the caravan but its easy.
