Awesome upgrade to a Squire P-bass.
Awesome upgrade to a Squire P-bass. These have the right thump and tone. I could never give up this bass. I also upgraded electronics and copper-foiled the cavities.

How to make a cheap P bass sound great!
I bought a cheap Fender Squier P bass recently but it just didn't sound great. Obviously I couldn't blame it because I purchased it so cheaply but wondered if I could just install some higher end pickups to help the tone. I am very happy I did because these sound incredible in comparison to the stock pickups. The sound is much warmer and full bodied. Previously I had to keep the tone knob all the way back because the treble sounded terrible but now it is my favorite tone on the guitar. Now after some setup work and these pickups my cheap bass plays and sounds like a dream. Makes me want to try buying more cheap guitars for pickup swaps.

Disappointed
I swapped out my MIM stock player series PBass pickups with these. The D string is so faint. The output of the D vs. the other stings very very low. I tested all the connections and everything was in order. I know how to install them and setup my bass pretty well. I went back and reinstalled my old pickups and they did not have this issue. Maybe the magnets are bad? IDK. Just really frustrating because I was looking forward to this upgrade. Saw a lot of great videos on YouTube.

Finally found that great sound!
I have a 70's P Bass, and have tried several pickups over the years, including the originals, EMG's, Lindy Fralin's, and now these '62 Fender Custom Shop. This is finally the sound I've always wanted. I'm not sure what the usual descriptors mean to others, but this sound is rich and distinct, with loads of character, and thumps, pops, and growls when you want it to. Love it! Deep without being boomy. I used the standard P-bass wiring rather than the wiring in the instructions, and it sounds so great that I will just leave it like that. Extremely happy!

Be sure to test before installing
After soldered in there wasn't any sound or signal. I went through with the multimeter and the problem seemed to be the pickups. Once removed with the cover off the problem was apparent. As shown in the picture on the right side, double solder on one joint that's in contract with the coil, and no solder on the other. I'll update if able to fix, but I don't feel right returning as I've mangled the base plate to fit into a non fender bass.Update: I was able to remove the excess solder, but when I tried to do the side lacking I snapped and lost the coil lead... So, I ended up buying another and it works great and has the tone I wanted. Think I'll use the working half of the 1st pickup to make an improvised something-or-other.

Sound great
Putting this in my bass (2010 Mexican made Standard Precision Bass) along with some new pots changed everything. This bass is now a blast to play and sounds great.

Not a DIY, but great results!
I’m an experienced electronics and audio engineer and after doing this swap, I would caution most DIY guys. Unless you have a professional soldering station and access to guitar electrical components then I would not recommend you do this yourself. You can easily damage the capacitors with a hobby iron and you will need to re-wire many of the P-Bass models to the included diagram. With all that said, this will be a significant upgrade for many of the Precision Bass guitars out there and if anyone plays it in comparison they will know why.
