G.I. Joe John F. Kennedy PT Boat Commander 12 Inch Action Figure

Urban legend has it that the first G I Joe action figure resembled President John F. Kennedy. When Hasbro released its line of historical action figures, I got one. This offering by Amazon is reasonably priced.Aside from the face sculp I do have issues with its accuracy. The knife isn't as shown in photos of John F. Kennedy aboard his famous PT 109. The web belt and holster aren't realistic. The dog tag is more for collectability as a Hasbro toy than as a museum piece. It depends on what you want from this product. As a toy, it is okay. But several military museums exhibit 12 inch action figures because they are cost-effective displays and fairly accurate, too.Uniforms for PT boat crews in the South Pacific were casual--sometimes absent entirely--because of heat and humidity. Besides, going over the side to remove fouling from the propellers would soak clothing--and those clothes wouldn't dry out. Lack of identification or rank insignia was common on those boats during patrol. The JFK PT 109 "uniform" isn't incorrect for patrol--and there is room for improvement. Kennedy in World War II The revolver is a good likeness of the issue .38 Smith and Wesson Victory Model and the coconut husk is a nice touch. The sunglasses are authentic enough and photos of Lieutenant Commander Kennedy feature them--and the plastic cap works in 1:6th scale.This toy can be used several ways. As boxed, it is quite handsome as a display piece--though "investors" (they call themselves collectors) would want to protect it from oxygen, light, heat and humidity. The figure can be removed and modified by changing the uniform and equipment to make it more realistic as a museum-quality display. And, of course, it can simply be a toy.Either as a toy or as a center piece to a private museum display, this is a good value.
