A must read
A must read. The reviewer giving very negative comments fails to acknowledge the poorly argued and articulted case against van Manen.

Simplicity within complexity
There is little to dislike about this book, it is written by some one who clearly appreciates that this book will by all types of individuals, with varying needs. I thought I was sold on Gadamer; maybe not?

Exceptional
Brilliant, inspiring, exciting to read. Van Manen provides an authoritative account of phenomenology, weaving it skillfully with other philosophical traditions to extend it, and to push it beyond its often sterile and increasingly mainstream preoccupations. He breathes life back into qualitative research.

Mostly hot air and drivel. Read John Paley's complete demolition ['Phenomenology as Qualitative Research', 2017] of van Manen's previous book, 'Researching Lived Experience', to discover why. This is more of the same.

Masterpiece
van Manen is a master of contemporary phenomenology. I find his work on phenomenology in education extremely illuminating. This book does not dwell much on methods (van Manen in general advocates a fluid, cross-sectional approach when doing phenomenology) but more on the nature of the methodology.

Essential reading for students of phenomenology
In this book Van Manen coalesces the reading and reflection of a career dedicated to building an accessible methodology for those interested in pursuing hermeneutic phenomenology research. This work builds on his earlier "Researching Lived Experience" by more fully explicating and describing phenomenological research methods as they pertain to professional practice. The chapters devoted to the beginnings of the phenomenological orientation back to Descartes through to Husserl, Heideggger, Merleau -Ponty to contemporary practitioners like Serres and Nancy, provide a valuable contextualization to situate phenomenology as a philosophical school and a practical research enterprise. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in human science research in general, and phenomenological research specifically.

Awesome sauce!
This book its amazing. the most cool thing about this book is that it helps you to understand and locate your previous phenomenology experience which in my case was with psychology and anthropology. It does not require prior experience as it is pretty clear with the basics and takes its tima to get deep in more complex concepts.

A great starting place
Great breakdown and analysis of the great minds of phenomenology. In the process we learn about phenomenological process from the greats as well through the expert interpretation of Manen. A lot of great references and stepping off points for deeper understanding.

This book is the best yet
This is the best book on phenomenology out of all I have read. Phenomenology of Practice highlights phenomenological traditions and methods including historical developments. Van Manen is known for his strength in research method and this section in this edition is enhanced. This book is modern as it considers the digital world we live in today. If I were to recommend only one book to read, to a new or seasoned phenomenologist, or person interested in human nature and lived experience, this would be the book. It is a one stop shop!
