Timeless Tartans Cotton Blend Socks

My Father in law went to Brown and every so often I’ll find a unique Brown-inspired gift for him. Who knew Amazon had Brown University socks? They don’t even carry them in their bookstore. He loved them!

A disclaimer up front. I did not go to the school. The only thing I know about socks is that I have worn them for six decades.I found it interesting that the package literature says that the selected weave was based on the school colors and an algorithm using school founding date and geographical coordinates. In other words, pure marketing.Upon opening the package, the socks appear thin and have scant hand feel appeal. I liked the amount of height on the calf. The weave pattern is not particularly attractive (perhaps the college’s incorporation date was inopportune) and I wondered if it could have been applied with a silk screen. Inspection of the back side revealed that different colored thread was actually used in the weave (see photo). The college and manufacturer’s logo might have been embroidered based on the presence of a fuzzy backer. No clue how they did that since the top layer does not show any overlying stitching. The sides of the heel and the perimeter of the toe box are serged to conform to the shape of the foot. A piece of spandex has been serged around the underside of the sock top to prevent ankle droop. The socks show a surprising amount of hand labor to create.I liked the construction of the sock. Perhaps adding a few percent of silk to the cotton would have made my feet feel better. The aesthetics of the weave appearance is judgmental, but I would feed another date to the algorithm and hope for the best.

Just got my BC Timeless Tartans socks and I’m already in love with them! I’ve been wearing them all day and whenever I look down, they remind me of days on the quad, never-ending meals at McElroy, themed parties on lower campus. They’re soft, very well-made and a classy way to show my pride for my alma matter. :)
