Was a bit confused on what they were for at first... but once I learned about what they were used for and tried them out, I noticed they were made well!

Still Have Plenty
I needed this for my painting class in the fall semester in college. After I was done with that class and recieved an A, I still to this day, continue to paint. After doing over 15 paintings, I still have plenty of charcoal left. This is the kind of charcoal you need to put on your canvas as a guide, see you can see what it is that you are about to paint.

Would not recommend
These are not very soft or pigmented. I’m using these in a class and most people’s vine charcoal is much darker. Teacher said the same thing after trying these. When I blend, very little is left on the paper.Oddly enough, another student with these same charcoals is getting a better result than I do from mine. So I’m not sure if these are just old or fake or a bad batch. The first package I ordered came broken into tiny pieces too. Better off shopping locally for these.
