I don't handle a large volume of bills, so speed is not of the essence. I need dependability and accuracy above all. The Aneken AL-139 Counterfeit Bill Detector exceeded my expectations, and at an unexpectedly low price.You feed the bills by hand, and it takes about a half second per bill to run through. My previous counter was much faster, but that's all it did. It didn't recognize bill denominations and counterfeits. The Aneken AL-139 Counterfeit Bill Detector does all of those things.It doesn't just work with US currency. It works with Euros, UK notes, and Mexican banknotes. I tested it with sample Euros, and it worked just as readily as it did with US currency. It can check UV, magnetic, and visual features, so it's a lot more accurate than a simple UV scan, starch pen, or visual inspection.I tried all denominations of US currency, from $ 1 - $ 100 bills. It detected the value every time, even in a mixed stack, and counts the denominations separately, along with a grand total. I tested with some realistic fake currency (Chinese New Year gift money), and it detected the discrepancies immediately. To my surprise, the $ 2 bills were counted properly.The machine's firmware can be updated, so I expect that it will work even if there are changes in the currency. You can read all your counts and totals from the screen. A specific error message indicates why a bill was rejected.You can feed the bills in any orientation, which I found surprising but helpful. The one problem I have is that the bills must be fed perfectly straight against the left edge of the feeder, and I've misfed quite a few bills. A slider on the bill acceptor to set the width of the currency would be a big help, at least in the U.S.!

Having seen use in a retail setting, this bill detector was so close to being amazing. It goes more in depth than others I've used regarding the error codes explaining why a bill was rejected. I like the width of the feeding slot, I don't feel like I am threading a needle. The design of the detector is incredibly sleek and modern, making it aesthetically viable. The fact that it counts the money total for you has been helpful as well!However, I have three big issues with this machine. The first is that it will produce many false negatives - multiple different times I have tried running a manually verified $100 bill through, aligned properly and all, only for it to be rejected with different error codes each time. I would then walk 30 feet to the new location of our old bill detector for it to pass it in one go. This happens so frequently that multiple of my cashiers requested we bring the previous one back, so this will only be used as a backup from now on.The second main issue I have is that when a bill is rejected, unlike other detectors I've used, this one will shoot the bill back out toward you at rocket speed. This combined with the frequent false negatives means unless I put more effort in than I really should need to, bills will rocket to the floor and that is quite infuriating.The third being that it is not very intuitive to use all things considered.If the bills didn't rocket onto the floor so frequently during false negatives, this would have received a 5 star review. But I've seen other machines designed in a way that prevents this issue. This bill detector is an okay one, but you definitely can't use it on the front lines or when you're in a hurry.
