Great resource. Everything you need to know about the navy. Organization, ships, weapons, etc.

Love this book. Waited a long time for the new edition to come out and drop in price before I bought it, but I am glad I did. If you want to know what your government is doing with the U.S. Navy, it is a good source for information. I have not read the entire book yet as I just received it about a month ago, but I already see Congress and the U.S. Navy are making incorrect decisions about weapons systems.I favor a mix of both non nuclear and nuclear powered aircraft carriers and submarines. I am not sold on the littoral combat ships, and I think we need more ships and plans at a reasonable cost instead of what the air force and navy are paying for current ships and planes. Finally I am not sold on a separate air force either. The air force should be used to support the army and provide for a continental and space based defense. The navy should be used in injunction with the naval forces to project american power abroad when terrorism, piracy, or instability threatens american lives or property or interests abroad, or certain nation states threaten American interests or allies abroad. We should devise a military to achieve that particular objective, especially when diplomacy fails or intelligence is missing or lacking.

As in the past, Normal Polmar's copy's of "The Naval Institute Guide to Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Fleet, updated 19th edition is superb.The history he forwards on to the public is incomparable in it's depth. This book, as well as his others like it is clear concise and filled withexcellent information. Much research by Polmar is obvious. If anyone is interested in our ship's and aircraft in the U.S. do not hesitate to buythis book. I bought this edition to add to my husband's library. It was an excellent choice for his 80th birthday and points out all of the jobshe has had for the U.S. Navy. He loves this edition as it brings him up to date on what is and has been done to improve the fleet that defendsour nation. Thank you, Norman Polmar, for all of your in-depth research and work. I highly recommend any and all editions of Polmar's books.Trish Schiesser

Fairly up-to-date even for 2014, though written in late 2011(?). Mr. Polmar includes thorough discussions of plans for the fleet for the coming decade, including discussions of issues such as the prospects of the LCS "class", future ICBM and conventional missile subs, and naval aviation. Future destroyer building plans, although not fully settled at the time of publication, have in fact followed the route of least resistance, with current plans to continue building many more improved Burke-class vessels. This is a fascinating and encyclopedic reference, really a necessity for anyone interested in our Navy, whether from a strategic, practical, or enthusiast viewpoint.I was sorry to read in the preface that this was Mr. Polmar last edition as author, as he is passing the torch to a younger generation. He will be missed!

A masterpiece by an author who knows his subject really well. Pity this is I believe his last involvement with this particular book. Very large and very heavy but worth waiting for. I saved a considerable amount of money by buying a shop soiled copy(Torn Dust cover) which I was able to repair. Essential reading for those interested in the US Navy.

Dieses Buch reiht sich nahtlos ein,in die hervorragenden Vorgänger.Man erhält einen umfassenden und auch tiefergehenden Einblick in die us navy.Dies gilt für die Organisation,Personal sowie die Ausrüstung. Ebenso präzise wird der Bereich des marine corps und der coast guard abgehandelt. Durch diese Faktoren ist der nicht ganz geringe Preis gerechtfertigt. Es sind jedoch entsprechende Englischkenntnisse nötig. Ohne diese verbleiben nur die informativen und vielfältigen Bilder des Buches.

「世界の艦船」の米海軍特集に物足りない方にお勧め。英語の勉強にも一役買う。英語が得意じゃない人でも比較的読みやすいと思います。

Some time since I have bought a naval book. Excellent presentation, by a world renowned author.Very enjoyable and bang up to date with US Navy ships. Can well recommend this publication.
