Stand by Me
The movie is a surprisingly very accurate retelling, almost down to key details that most filmmakers would find unnecessary. But that’s Rob Reiner for you, there are obviously some notable differences, this story is a tad more magical realism, there’s a much bleaker side to the ending. And Gordies life as an author takes center stage a lot more, there’s a sequence near the early middle, that I do think kills the pacing a tad. With a story that isn’t in the movie by the way, that kind of comes out of nowhere, and while it’s interesting it doesn’t have the same thematic relevance as Lard A&& does. It’s a great story, I haven’t read a ton of Kings shorts or his novellas, because he’s written so much that it’s hard to keep up. Plus most of his shorts and novellas are what RL Stine would call a feature length novel so that’s a ton of reading. But the high spots are always high, The Body is no exception.

powerful
This book is much more than what people usually expect from Stephen King. Yes, there’s darkness, tension, and that underlying sense of unease, but at its core The Body is a deeply emotional coming of age story. It focuses on friendship, loss, and that strange moment in life when you realize childhood doesn’t last forever. The characters feel incredibly real, especially the dynamic between the boys. Their conversations, fears, and bravery feel authentic, not exaggerated. King captures that raw honesty of being young when everything feels intense, permanent, and life changing. The journey they take is physical, but the real impact is emotional and psychological. What I appreciated most is how reflective the story is. It’s nostalgic without being cheesy, dark without being excessive, and emotional without trying too hard. This is one of those books you finish and then sit there for a moment, thinking about your own childhood and the people who shaped you. Easily a 5 star read and a must read even for people who don’t usually gravitate toward Stephen King.

The story seems to wander in search of itself.
Not King's best work. Rambles on with too many characters and TMI, much of which is uninteresting and relatable only if you lived in the 50s. The rest is stereotypical—kids just being kids, doing goofy stuff, getting into mischief. Been there done that. Nothing really fresh or new. The story seems to wander in search of itself. The book within a book stuff is tiring and unnecessary, adding little to the overall story. Infused with King’s inimitable style. So worth a quick read.
