Q: The jaw seems wide for XH2.54 mm - if I insert a female terminal deep so that the tab doesn't get smashed, the terminal is not held well.

You are correct but if you take your time and be careful they will work. I've done it more than once. For me it was an issue with light gauge wire. But I figured it out. It's not pretty but it will even do 20 gauge.

It will work with 16 and 18 gauge wire. It's good for DuPont pins it'll even work with jst connectors. It's a little hard to get them to crimp right because the jaws areva little wide but I have used them to crimp jst pins.
