In a bottle as steely as the nerves of a car driver preparing for the race ahead, Precious Mettle opens with a burst of freshness. Classic notes of leather, lavender and patchouli combined with airy mandarin and metallic pink pepper. A thrilling citrus woody with a brilliance that evokes the adrenaline rush of the race. Review: Grandsons choice hes 19 and loves it Review: This is a very pleasant, gender neutral, understated scent with a somewhat quirky bottle design. The scent arrives smartly packaged - the unboxing experience is worthy of the distinguished Formula One brand. The ‘Precious Mettle’ box and bottle are both in gunmetal grey, with the bottle shaped a little like an Oscar award. Before we get to the scent, I have to say that the bottle design is not well thought through. The bottle comes with a separate, flexible base which it needs in order to stand up properly. I found this an unnecessary and fiddly feature, especially as the bottle has to be carefully placed in the base, and the base is not heavy enough to be reassuring. Surely the designers could have managed a bottle that stands on its own - I thought F1 was all about design and ergonomics! The scent itself is delivered nicely through the spray bottle - just the right amount in a single spray for each wrist or each side of the neck as you prefer. The scent is mild, with clear notes of lavender and especially citrus. I was transported back to the 1990s a little, as the scent has a passing resemblance to the ground-breaking, gender neutral ‘CK One’ scent which first appeared in that decade. That comparison is no bad thing - Precious Mettle is pleasant, distinctive without being offensive, and in my testing, lasted for several hours. One day I could still detect it on my wrist 6 hours or more after applying it. Overall, this is a good choice for someone who is a serious fan of F1, looking for a long lasting, understated scent that is led by citrus. Just beware that the quirky bottle design requires carefully removal and replacement of the bottle on its base.
