Just what I needed

Awesome for $5
Really great for $5.Cons:Biggest con is the index line is basically impossible to see. Its dark red on a black background. Initially I thought it didn't include one. I might try to take it apart and go over the line with a silver sharpie or something. The housing the bezel is mounted in has a couple of degrees of movement. I dont mean the bezel itself i mean the housing. This is a problem because index line will be off by a couple degrees from the sighting line but you can fix it with a drop of glue.A little slow to find north but the needle is steady and accurate.Pros:Everything else is great. The design is awesome and works with maps so well. A really nice long 6 inch straight edge to plot a bearing. I used to never be able to decide between baseplate or lensatic compasses. Now I dont have to! Works great as both.

Very vulnerable
Good for kids or scouts I suppose. I keep this as a backup, but one day I noticed the needle got magnetized somehow while in my backpack (proximity to my wireless earbuds maybe?), and the N pointed SSW for awhile. I was able to correct this, but I would never trust my life to it. But I still bring it everywhere while I’m on the go.

Great for shooting azimuths as well as map use
The compass shipped in its flat, unfolded state. When I first removed it from the packaging and folded it, I was impressed at how protected and durable it seems in this compact state. Once unfolded, I could see that it has an impressive amount of features as well. The title of the listing touts this as a “military compass”. Even though I think that this is largely for marketing, I found that it does have at least some things in common with its military counterpart. The hinged magnifying eyepiece has an integrated slot, which can be used in conjunction with the corresponding aiming line/sight slot on the cover when folded up perpendicular to the baseplate for shooting a bearing to a landmark This function is very similar to that of an Army issued lensatic compass. For the most part, however, this compass is more similarly designed to a very popular model of Silva baseplate compass. The rotating bezel is not only useful for setting the magnetic offset, but is also excellent for certain map orientation techniques. When the compass is open all the way, with both halves lying flat, they turn the compass into an excellent map protractor. Measurements are clearly marked in separate sections for inches, millimeters, map distance in meters (1:25000 scale), and miles (1:2400 scale). The various circular and one triangle hole(s) cut into the cover/base plate are perfect for marking points of interest on the map. Each of these holes are cut with a bevel around the edge to accommodate the writing utensil of choice. Finally, the compass includes a bright yellow nylon cord that feeds through a raised section on the base plate for around-the-neck carrying as a lanyard. All things considered, this is a well designed and useful piece of land navigation equipment.

Not very good.
I returned these. The compass part was pretty low quality. Any little bump and movement threw off the compass. I needed something a bit better to put in my kids outdoor packs.

Accurate with a lot of features but not for me.
This compass is trying to merge the features of a baseplate compass with the sighting features of a military compass. It doesn't quite work for me. I find the unfolded size too large for map work. It works for sighting but I don't trust it as much as a compass with a mirror. I do like that you can use it as a protractor for distance measurement and there's a variety of distance scales on it. I think it's a decent value, for me a regular baseplate compass fits my needs better.

Great affordable survival compass
This isn't going to be the item you buy if your life will truly depend on it, but for a simple compass to keep in an emergency bag for general direction and map reading, this is a fantastic purchase. Compared to my high dollar compass and my phone app it isn't spot on accurate, but it's close enough to help guide me in the direction I need to go. This product arrived remarkably well packaged and protected, orients itself quickly and the compass stays mobile even in -20F temps. It's an absolute steal at 5 bucks and so much better than similar pocket compasses that cost 4x's as much.
