I have purchased and given a copy of this book to every one of my student teachers since a I first read it.
I am in awe of Fang and Schleppegrell. This book is a richer exploration of the ideas they proposed in their paper: Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy 53(7) April 2010 doi:10.1598/JAAL.53.7.6 © 2010 International Reading Association (pp. 587–597). If your goal is to incorporate Functional Language Analysis into your classroom practice, this text is a must. Schleppegrell's The Language of Schooling: A Functional Linguistics Perspective may certainly be considered a definitive text for scholars on the topic of Systemic Functional Analysis, but her work with Fang are go-to texts for practitioners. My real vote of confidence for this book by Fang and Schleppegrell is that I have purchased and given a copy of this book to every one of my student teachers since a I first read it.

Thorough but extremely dense text
The main lesson I learned from this book is that as educators and academics, we have skills that much of our population takes for granted. We certainly do not have an excuse for students being bored and unengaged with schoolwork. Part of our job is to help students learn the language of academia.

Fang Text
Overall, this book is really interesting and is a great part of my graduate program. No worries here about overly dense text. Simple and to the point.
