Impressive !!
This knife is a very impressive tool. It is quite hefty and very solid feeling. The handle is smoothly finished and very nice to hold. The blade is long and symmetrical and evenly positioned in the handle. There are tiny gaps either side where the blade is inserted into the handle but it feels very solid and doesn't seem to have any give. The blade is highly polished and looks great, it wasn't very sharp when delivered but a quick hone with the diamond steel and an edge came up okay. I will be trying to put a razor edge on it but have to be careful not to scuff the mirror polish on the rest of the blade. The leather sheath is mostly very solid and well finished except for the piece that holds the blade in is stitched and glued, and the glue has come away a bit but it still seems to be well attached. The only real imperfection was the that the knife was delivered in the box but out of the sheath and the tip of the knife had pierced the packaging and caused a burr on the end of the blade. This was fixed on a stone with no real drama but would've been nice not to worry about.I took this knife to work and the boys and girls in the kitchen all liked it but when all the guys from the security department had it in their hands, one after the other, you could see the gleam in their eye and the testosterone level rise, yeah it's an impressive knife to hold and even though it's a china made replica it feels like it would work for whatever you wanted it to do.D

Its a beast
I wasn't sure about this knife. Obviously it looks awesome but I prefer anything I buy, while I'm really just collecting, to be a usable "battle ready" piece. I don't need antiques but I want a knife that's actually a knife, not a prop. That being said I knew these were being made in China, of course I would prefer American made, but that doesn't necessarily result in bad craftsmanship. So when I saw the price on this one drop almost 50% I decided to jump on it, and I'm glad I did. Out of the box this thing is a beast! It's one thing to read about the specs online and know its a 12" blade, almost :), and another to hold it in your hand, staring at it in disbelief. This is a man's blade, a large man's blade. It's got great weight and the balance is centered right above the hilt at the bottom of the blade. Its very solid, nothing is loose and the mirror shine is impressive. The gold blade catcher, which really adds something to it asthetically, gets caught on the sheathe and is difficult to draw as well as sheathe quickly. This is the only real issue but the sheathe will open up over time and I can oil it if necessary to help it stretch. The hardwood handle is smooth and solid which makes a nice display but over time, especially when its hot, the sweat from your hands could easily make it slip so if you take this thing out into the world with you just be conscience of that fact or make sure you've got a good pair of gloave with you. This is not the most verstitle blade I have and nto really appropriate for most situations, like camping, hunting, etc. but if you buy something like this you don't do it for practical use anyway. Hand to hand or hand to zombie combat, yeah, you're gonna do some serious damage. Be careful, and enjoy it, like I said, its a beast.

This is a BIG knife.
This is a high quality product for a good price. However, it is not a big knife; it is a small sword. It's primary function would be in a horror movie. When I look at it I hear sound effects: ee-ee-ee. Don't know what I'll do with it. It is too big to be functional on a daily basis. But otherwise is a really cool knife.

Not bad for an entry-level collectable
United Cutlery is (in)famous for making overpriced wallhangers, so I went into this purchase with low expectations. The asking price ($56) was low enough that it fell under my impulse purchase threshold, so I took a chance. If I had paid the full MSRP of $163, I'd have been sorely disappointed. It's not a $163 knife. It's barely a $63 knife. But, for what I paid, I was pleasantly surprised.Bottom line, it's not a bad knife for the money. It's just not great. It's made in China of AUS-6 stainless steel, two factors which won't earn it any love from knife snobs who think that any blade that isn't high carbon steel is no better than a plastic spork. AUS-6 is a low-grade stainless with 0.65% carbon content, comparable to 420, but a little harder and with a little less corrosion resistance. AUS-6 is commonly used in mid-tier kitchen knives. Again, not bad, but not great either. It's definitely not a knife you'd want to use for anything serious, but it's more than adequate for historical reenactment / cosplay and light camping chores, and it's cheap enough that if it breaks it's not a great loss. It came reasonably sharp out of the box, and a little attention with a stone honed it to a razor edge. Naturally, it's not going to hold an edge like a high carbon blade or even a higher grade of stainless, but that's no different than any comparably priced stainless kitchen knife. My main complaint is the sheath, which is too tight, not ambidextrous, and is blatantly modern in appearance, which is a definite minus for something billed as an old west period piece.Fit and finish is acceptable for the price I paid. Balance is a bit blade heavy for my preference, but it feels good in the hand. The polished wood hilt is very smooth which would be unacceptable in a serious fighting / survival knife - some checkering or finger grooves would give a more positive grip. I'll probably wind up making a new sheath and doing something to give the hilt a bit more grip, but I'm comfortable doing that kind of customization.Bottom line, for the price, it's an acceptable entry-level collector piece.
