You got to get used to it and give it time
Great price. I would leave it out for a day or two to air out the strong earthy smell but if you like it, then you can use it straight out the box like I did. I wanted to try to sleep on the floor for back pain relief and it was great. It stretched me out and I feel right asleep as soon as I hit the mat. I didn’t use a futon but rather a folded-in-half-queen-size-comforter and a small quilt as a cover. It took me about 2 months to build “calluses” on my hip and upper back but it was well worth it for me. I went from sleeping on tile to carpet and now it feels too soft on carpet lol. I would highly recommend to at least give it a try and see if it works for you as it’s not a huge investment versus a $1k mattress.

Smells like Japan
These made my place smell wonderfully like Japan (rather than like carpet.. yuck!), and are well constructed and much sturdier and thicker than other ones I saw online. Haven't slept on it yet but am excited to!

Such an amazing bed!
Has a very different feeling compared to a spring mattress but once you get used to it it's soo comfy! My fave style bed!

Too hard
I use a very thin futon made from hemp filling and linen cover and this mat was almost as hard as the hardwood floor. I now have my futon in a yoga mat and carpeted floor and it is softer. I needed a little bit of give so I returned it. The smell was strong and Grady. Nice smell but not my favorite. In my opinion it wasn’t worth the price for my minimalist travel lifestyle.

Great mat!
Honestly I just got into shikibutons and tatami mats and the mat is amazing! I’m very happy with it honestly I think the thickness is just right any less and it would be to hard for me!

It's great for the price!
The color of Tamai was a little faded from green to yellow at the edge of tatami, but it’s minimal and acceptable. Some weaves of the Igusa (rush) were brown. The tatami is not perfect and not Japanese tatami quality, but it works fine for me and came with a storage bag, which is very convenient. It's great for this price. I'm happy with purchase!

Smells awful
Have a very strong bad smell especially that I needed to use it on top of my soft mattress so I can’t sleep at night … and to return it I have to package it back and print labels and go to ups store extremely inconvenient…. Very disappointing

Wasnt sure, worth the buy after using it for a week
I moved to a small house and can't use a regular bed or pullout couch, this solved my space issue and is worth the money. I am a week in and I love it!
