Hing Asafoetida Powder Gluten Free - Indian Spice for Garlic & Onion Substitute, 20g Glass Bottle

This stuff is great! It stinks, but it's supposed to. It seems very fresh and full of flavor. I can no longer have onions or garlic and learned that hing is a substitute for those flavors. It's not exactly the same, but it offers a savory and somewhat pungent hint of garlic and onion that helps add depth to my recipes. You only need a PINCH of this stuff so don't shake it in. There is a learning curve. But it works great once you get the hang of it. I'm very happy with the quality.

Hung is one of those divisive foods - you either love it or hate it. I’ve hated all the other brands I’ve tried, but the advertising on this product convinced me to try it. They are accurate, as I love this product. It definitely has a strong odor, but it adds such a complex flavor to my cooking that I reach for it often. It is definitely high quality stuff, but I wish it weren’t so expensive or was sold in larger sizes. But you definitely don’t want to dump a whole lot of this into any dish, so it does take a bit to use up the tiny little jar. Maybe there’s a freshness limit to selling it in larger quantities? I don’t know, but I do use this in my Indian dishes all the time now.

Asafoetida (hing) is an essential ingredient in many Indian dals and vegetable dishes. For many years I have used either the "yellow stuff," (Vandevi) which is very mild because it is so heavily cut, or the "grey stuff," (L.G.) which is stronger and purer. But this Best Hing Ever is in another category. When you open the jar, you get the familiar beautiful stench that is characteristic of this resin, but unlike the L.G, that almost shocking aroma is completely transformed when it is tempered in oil or ghee. Then, this asafoetida is radically tamed, and takes on an almost unearthly fragrance and flavor, which immediately elevate Indian cooking to a higher plane. Because you use so little of it, the price is not objectionable. Also, it comes in a sturdy little glass jar, not cheap plastic. I recommend putting the jar it comes in inside another sealed glass jar to keep the aroma in check.

I really can’t say if this is the best hing ever because I am new to Indian cooking, but I bought it because number of the recipes I want to try have hing as an ingredient. Other statements on the label I definitely agree with. It is very potent. Only use a pinch. I am glad it comes in a glass jar that can be tightly sealed, because it has a very strong smell. Maybe I will try a less expensive brand next time because how can I compare if I don’t try other brands? But for now, I am happy with this and will continue to use it until it’s gone. And even though I am using this hing a couple of times a week at present, that may be a while because a little of this goes a loooonnnnnggggg way.

I have GERD and can't have onions (even onion powder bothers me) and it was suggested I try Asofoetida powder, and specifically, this brand. Everyone comments on the smell and advises keeping it away from other foods in your pantry and keeping it in a bag. I was terrified to even open it lol But, while it doesn't smell great, it's not like a sulfur bomb going off in your kitchen where you need to open all windows evacuate from the odor. I use, just a pinch as advised, wash my hands and no issue. It does add a detectable onion-ish flavor that adds a little something to my bland food but it's not overwhelming at all. In fact, I would be tempted to add more but the bottle and various articles say not to or else it will taste awful. Package and delivery were great and it's nice to have something that adds more flavor to my foods without adverse reactions.

This is the next best thing to grinding the resin yourself. It has a nice strong flavor without the additives which I like.

Be aware!!!! This is a 20g jar!!! I thought I was buying an 8 oz jar!! 20g is less than an ounce!! That means that you are paying over 13 dollars, maybe 14 or 15 per ounce! I wanted to ask for a return or refund but it seemed like a hassle since I waited so long to get this. I figured I would just cut my losses and say whatever. I think I may mix it with fenugreek to stretch it longer, but still, most mixes are 40% hing / 60% fenugreek so even that at most would get me 2-3 ounces. All of that aside, the taste is sublime. My mistake for not realizing the size of jar, I guess I assumed for the price it had to be more. Better off going to Starwest Botanicals website and getting a pound (16oz) of their organic hing/fenugreek mix. It runs you like 30-35 but still, it'll last you a while. Theyre on and off of amazon so just do their website directly. Again not really the hing salesmans fault, I'm just kicking myself for buying this unconsciously.

Seems expensive but you need so little it will go a long way! Adds a very distinctive taste to the Dahl I like to make...I love it...so much fresher tasting and more aromatic than the brand I previously purchased. Will stick to this brand from now on.
