To thoroughly remove any coffee oil residue, use a grinder cleaning product called, "Urnex" they also make a more "natural" version called, "Full Circle". They are cleaning tablets made just for burr coffee grinders. You just set the grinder to a medium to coarse setting, then add one capful of the tabs, grind them through, then use your brush to clean all the parts as usual. The tablets will sweep away any coffee grounds remaining inside the machine and absorb the leftover coffee oils that would become rancid if left behind. Hope this helps.

Just got this machine and every time I run it, it starts grinding, then slows down and makes a horrible knocking sound. Have to tear it apart..defect?

My original purchase started laboring at the 12 grind setting with Starbucks French Roast beans within a few days. While I did not get a knocking sound, the grind output is light of what it should be. After re-reading all the great reviews, I decided that I must have just gotten a bad machine. The second one is exhibiting the same laboring behavior within a day of opening the box. I'm not a grinder expert but this sounds to me like a motor which is under powered for the job.

Is the smart grinder pro the same mechanically as the dose control pro? i'm looking for good consistency for both coarse and drip.

The BCG820BKSXL Smart Grinder Pro differs from the BCG600SIL Dose Control in that the Smart Grinder is calibrated much more specifically towards espresso purposes, and while the Dose Control has espresso levels it does not share the same range for micro-adjustment as is often necessary to achieve higher end espresso results. Further internal and operational differences include functional differences in terms of programming, component and material upgrades, etc.

We are hoping to pull about 50 shots a day, once a week. Can it hold up?

This is something I haven't tried, however maybe I can shed some light on it. The manual warns against heavy use. "Do Not operate this appliance for longer than 2 minutes at a time . . . " ; "Allow 2 minutes to cool after each use."; "Allow the appliance to cool down 10-15 minutes after long operation." Also, my grandson has opened his 2nd coffee shop. Since December, he purchased this unit to use for his decaf customers only. (2-3 / day). He is already ordering a part that is wearing out. In saying that, it is apparently a 'known defect' with some Breville grinders. (see the reviews). Note: Since Breville does not supply parts, he is having one made by a 3rd party vendor who has a 3-D printer. I love my grinder, but this problem with the 'known defect' and Breville for not supplying parts is very frustrating. I will order this part to have on hand. Hope this helps.
