You don't need crushed ice at all. I just fill a convenience store cup with about two dozen ice cubes for a nearly 44 ounce serving. One tip: load about 5-6 ice cubes into each of the two sections, then run the ice grinder til those are done. Then keep adding ice in shifts til you have enough ice for whatever you're making.

Is the machine supposed to turn on as soon as its plugged in? I thought it could be plugged in and then turning the lid would turn on the machine.
