sorry, I did not use it for the flame from HWT.

I would say the dryer heat could damage or maybe even melt the seal. Maybe you could try removing the gasket and wrap a strip of fiberglass in it’s place.

Yes it creates a barrier and only opens one way from the inside of house

Yes, that's exactly how you would use it. Make sure to buy the correct HVAC aluminum (metallic) duct tape for the connection. A clamp cannot be used bc the crushing pressure would inhibit the flapper from working properly.
