Jonathan Green (10620) Black Beauty Dense Shade Grass Seed - Cool Season Lawn Seed (7 lb)

I have some very shaded parts of my yard where I have tried to grow other ground cover seeds to no avail. This seed seems to do the trick! I scattered the seeds and watered once or twice a day, and about a week or so later they started to sprout. Nice thick grass with beautiful green color :)

This stuff is gold. Ive tried for 4 years to get anything to grow in the heavily shaded area in front of my house. I aerated the area with cheap shoe add ons and did exactly as instructed. Spread seed and added two sprinller heads on a timer to water for 5-10 minues, 3 times a day. It started sprouting after 4 days. It was sull and thick at two weeks. Its been almost 4 weeks now and I've mowed it twice with no issues.

Finally, found a grass seed that works for my shaded area of need. I followed the directions, watered, it germinated quickly. Did a second light round of seed, spots are almost filled in. First seed I have used that has worked. So far so good.

Beautiful grass! It took a while to germinate the first time—probably because I didn’t do much soil prep, just spread the seeds on top, and the weather was cold for a couple of weeks. Once the temperature warmed up, it started growing much faster. On my second try, I tested a smaller patch and did a few things differently: I lightly covered the seeds with a thin layer of soil and watered twice a day. The instructions suggested watering up to four times daily, but I didn’t have time for that—twice a day still worked really well. It sprouted within a week and looked great. Definitely recommend, especially if you can give it consistent care!

This may be a good product for other soils and shaded conditions. Unfortunately, it did not grow in our soil in an area between two wooden fences that gets little sun.

This seed does sprout and grow in very shady area. The resulting grass leaves are tall and skinny, somewhat like Bermuda. The grass is a darker green than Saint Augustine. I have purchased several more bags to use to reseed bare spot in my yard.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:This product had good reviews and I have had terrible luck with grass seed in my background. There is a lot of shade throughout the day and sun after 4 pm. I have tried for several years to seed with not luck. The past seed said it was shade grass seed but it never got strong enough to last the next year. I have great hopes for this dense grass seed. It’s growing strong and thick and looks great. We will see. I will update.

This worked very well for me, with daily watering it germinated in about 2 weeks in a heavily shaded back lawn when it was an average of 85f outside and not much rain with straw covering (I'm East Coast).I was having issues finding the exact seed mixture of this so here is a photo from the back of the bag with their percentages. For me I wanted to know how much fine fescue was in this mix which I think is listed as Carson Chewings Fescue (I'm not a landscape expert).
