The Japanese Mind: Understanding Contemporary Japanese Culture Paperback – April 30, 2002

Originally from the UK, I have lived in Japan for more than half my life. Even so, there was a lot in this book that was new to me, and reading it has helped me to more deeply understand, the country I now call home. If you live in Japan or are just interested in Japanese thinking and society, there is much to be gained from reading this book.

内容は、甘え、天下り、集団意識、わびさび他日本人のidentityに深く影響しているtopicについて著者の監修のもと、大学の学生がリサーチしたものが、英語で書かれていて、それぞれのtopicの後ろにDiscussion Questionがついています。私の通っている大学で、授業の教科書として使われています。授業では、topicについて学習した後、Discussion Questionについて、海外の方や日本人と話しあいます。そうすると、ひとりでは気が付かなかった、日本人の心の奥にひそんでいる意識、無意識を左右してきた文化が見えてきたりして、とても役に立っています。国際化が進む中で、日本人も自分の文化を説明できる英語力が問われていると思いますが、そういう力をつけたい方はぜひぜひ読んで、周りの人と話し合ってみてください。

Can be a little long-winded and carries certain attitudes from the authors. However, has some valuable insights and can provide topics that may lead to further research.

高校留学に行った際にサムライ関係の話になりました。セップク （切腹）は海外でも有名でしたが、なんで切腹するのか、どうしてお腹なのかといったことはあまり気にしてなかったのでそれが英語で学べたのは興味深いだけでなく、文章の内容をそのままアメリカの友達に伝える事ができたしでよかったです。この本は外国人が知りたいであろう要素で構成されているので普通の日本の歴史の本を持って外国に行くよりはよかったと思います。

A good book overall but doesn't captivate me enough to finish it and want to learn more about the culture.
