Too many mistakes to use
I have no idea why math teachers are ranking this so high.I teach A-Level Maths and Further Maths at a school in Beijing. My students all have copies of this book. At the beginning of the year I got my hands on it for the first time, and it's been absolutely trash. I feel obliged to teach out of it, but I assign problems to the students, and about 20% of them are wrong. Some can't be answered as written. Some have the wrong solutions in the back. This is Cambridge University Press! How can they be this terrible. I've never seen a math text book have so many mistakes in it.I have to solve all the homework I assign myself, before I give it to the students, so I can make sure that the questions I assign can be worked. I have warned the students not to trust the answers in the back. It has increased my workload significantly, and for a while there I doubted my own ability to do math.I reached out to the publisher about this, and they're acting like they don't know what I'm talking about, despite citing at least three examples. I know that Cambridge is aware of the mistakes because I have since gotten my hands on a PDF copy of the solution manual, and that has the correct answers, questions that are rewritten, etc. But even the solution manual doesn't acknowledge the mistakes in the book. There are some misleading examples, as well, particularly in the chapter about vectors. Some of the assertions the authors make are just wrong as they are written, overly simplified for the benefit of the questions likely to be on the A-Level. In fact, the entire book feels less like a text book for learning, and more like a test prep book. I'm an American, and don't have a lot of experience with A-Levels, but I'm not impressed. Seems the courses exist to prepare kids for the exams, rather than the exams existing to assess student knowledge from the course. Y'all doin it wrong over dere.
