Good for piano lovers
I came across this book whilst searching for something else. I am interested in all things to do with pianos and am an adult learner. I have wanted to learn to play since childhood but my parents couldn't afford lessons but I am learning now so no looking back. I own a black, upright Yamaha but aspire to a french-polished grand. I sit at my piano most days, sometimes for up to 4 hours and don't care what I am doing with it so long as I can be near to it. I do not find scales boring and I enjoy every second I am with my piano. If this sounds like you, you will enjoy this book. It is for anyone who just loves the instrument and wants to talk about it and look at it in whatever form it comes. I also learned quite a bit too.

Fascinating
This is a wonderful book, a leisurely amble through the streets of Paris - you can almost smell the coffee. It gives a fascinating glimpse into the world of pianos with lots of factual information on how pianos are made and tuned. It is a gentle book and at the end you just lean back and sigh. I wish he would write some more.

America can understand France
I read this book in March, 2005. This was the book I enjoyed most over the past year. The author is an American who really knows France (where I live). And he loves music and pianos. He makes friends with a piano restorer and, with this as his point of departure, he takes us gently and with wit through the history of the piano - its invention, its makers, improvements, and great music written for the instrument. This is all against the background of the beautiful city of Paris and the character of the French. At a time when there have been 'misunderstandings' between his country and mine, how wonderful it is to read about an American's adventures in this wonderful, civilised country in 'old Europe'!

Possibly the best book I've ever read.
I got this book because it is about Paris, my favorite place in the world. The book is a 1,000 times better than I could have imagined. It's a wonderful, personal story (it is a memoire of the best, storytelling kind) beautifully told. The author was able to bring me into the story and I could follow him around in Paris. I've known for decades that Paris has been built up over the years by incorporating adjacent villages and that the "village feel" still exists in parts of the city. This book proves the point by demonstrating the daily closed village community tied to the Piano Shop and that's one of my favorite parts of the book. It is also about what it is like to love something deeply (the piano) and reconnecting with a love forgotten and bring it back to life. I've given a copy to a friend who plays piano and he was excited to receive it. I will read it again soon, and may take it with me on my next trip to the city I love,

El estado no es MUY BUENO como decía la descripción
Parece que un caracol ha tenido un festín con la tapa del libro. El resto está decente. No creo que se pueda describir como MUY BUENO el estado del libro

Sensitivity in the descriptions
Beautiful book, descriptions expressed sounded like those descriptions for a fine wine or a brush stroke in a painting, a lullaby even. No other author has such a delicate touch with words in my opinion.

Surprisingly entertaining srory.
Excellent story. For piano players a must. For non piano players still very entertaining. True story or not you can tell that a lot of research was done to write this novel. All prizes and praises are well deserved.I can relate to Thad's experiences as I too am a U.S. expat that's been living in Europe for many decades.
