I'm just starting out with Axis & Allies. Is this the best one for that purpose or do you recommend another version?

My preference would be for the 1942 version, what I call the "New Basic" game. But this, like many of the others of recent years, has been stripped of many useful components. If you can find an older version of the basic game, you'll perhaps be better off. It's getting harder and more confusing all the time, with every re-release of this game in many mutations, each adding something but also taking away something.

How is this game different (if at all) than the original A & A that came out in the 80s, had a lighter blue box?

It is a completely different game. Different map, different rules (similar, but different), different number of pieces. It is a weird version of the game that does not play as well as the original or the current 1942 version. It limits the number of pieces available for each player which makes it hard to launch attacks and defend one's territories.

how big is the gameboard/map?

Pretty big. I'd say the size of two regular RISK board's side by side. Maybe three.

Is there a way to play on an iPad and droid tablet or on Mac and Chromebook?

Game table Online. For a MODEST amount of money, you can play on PC. Not sure about chrome book or tablet compatibility.
