Encouraging and inspiring
I have read and loved many of Elisabeth Elliot's books since I became a Christian, but I was never sure whether I wanted to read this one because I was kind of ... afraid of Jim Elliot, knowing from her other books that he had been a pretty intense and resolute person with very high standards. And even though those are good things if applied to the right cause I was afraid subjecting myself to his influence might bring me under condemnation because I'm not as perfect a believer. I know this is nonsense, but that's how I felt. Now I did read the book and am very much encouraged instead of feeling condemned. I found it especially helpful to read about Jim's struggles and times of spiritual dryness - to see that he was challenged and confused like the rest of us - and to watch him mature troughout the years. I used to think of Jim as kind of an untouchable saint - but now I know him as a man who walked an ordinary-yet-extraordinary path, trying to give himself to God as competely as possible. And that's a path where I, or any believer, can also walk - and Jim's example has set some milestones that can serve us as orientation. Finally, what I love most about this book (on a meta level) is just how much Jim longed for his life to make a difference for Christ and be consumed for that purpose - and how I can see just that happening in my own life and apparently many other lives, his story impacting us and encouraging us to live an abandoned life. To read this overwhelming desire expressed in his journals and see its fruit 'materialize' in my own heart even 60 years after his death gives me goosebumps - because it is a display of God's faithfulness and awesome ways and victory even beyond death.Sara

Motivating, Enjoyable, and Convicting
This is the first book we've chosen in my discipleship group where I've wanted to read ahead of my high school students! Elisabeth Elliott is a skilled writer who can paint a picture of every story in your mind. I was skeptical at first when someone suggested it to me because she has written a few other books such as Passion and Purity that are difficult to read for the average reader. While she does use a few bigger words, and Jim Elliot's journals within this book have high vocabulary too, most of them are easy to figure out within the context, not really requiring you to have a dictionary handy. I recommend this book to people who have been required to read books enough to where now they've forgotten how fun it is to read an amazing story like this. Jim Elliot is now a real person to me instead of just a legend. He is a timeless role model for men of all ages, and this story to me is like a riveting TV show that I can't wait to watch each week!

Good lessons
§§§§§§§§§ There are spoilers! §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ If unfamiliar with the story! §§§§§I enjoyed and recommend this book.I'm shocked how abruptly the missionary expedition made up of the 4 men ended. All that build up and such a short lived reward. Seemingly anyway. How little contact was made with the tribe for all that preparedness. Why were the men killed and not protected by God? But I also recognize that God uses all things for good, that the men were ready to die, and that the impact from their deaths was perhaps greater than if there was a peaceful contact. As you may know contact was made later on and the story influenced many in the missionary calling worldwide. The men and the author are great role models and it's bittersweet how much suffering and loss good people go through. We have to remind ourselves that this Earth is not our home and that greater things await us in Eternity. Rewards for all our obedience and kindness and sacrifice. Eternal life itself though, a gift, held onto as we navigate this race and endure to the end. God bless.
