Perfect smoker for a complete beginner!
My first smoker, but thanks to it being electric it's so easy to use. Program the temperature & time right on it & forget it except for adding wood every 30 minutes (I only add wood once for light flavoring). For someone brand new at smoking, this was the best one I could have bought. I love it & the food that comes out of it is amazing! Oh, and it makes the porch & immediate area around our house smell great. I love sing people walking past the house start sniffing the air! Cleanup is super easy, too. I use an aluminum pan on the bottom rack to put a little water in & also catch the drippings, so the only thing I have to clean when I'm done is the rack the meat was on. Throw out the aluminum pan & dump the ashes from the wood chips & you're ready to go again.

Love this smoker
Less work than an offset and the results are pretty tasty … that being said it is not something that winners of smoking competitions would use to win a prize but for occasional ribs or chicken pieces or even Boston butts I don’t think you’d be disappointed

Good unit, horrendous delivery saga
This smoker replaced another MasterBuilt smoker that I had for years and had seen better days. This one is smaller than my old one and I didn't realize the size difference when ordering. It's fine though and should be large enough for anything that I want to cook. Getting the unit was a disaster though. I don't know how these ship, but I live in NW Florida. The unit shipped from Ocala FL, went to Jacksonville FL, then ended up in Washington State! After about 10 days I called Amazon and the service rep told me I would get a replacement sent overnight. Well, that means overnight from when it ships, not really overnight. I called on a Wed, expecting the unit Thurs. I got it the following Tuesday. This was well over two weeks from my initial order. I needed the smoker for an event a few days after I finally received it, so it was a little nerve wracking on whether I would actually get the unit in time. Now that I have it, the smoker is working well for me.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:Price point is good. Used a similar one for years and liked how easy it was to use.

Never really worked properly, then the controller shut down
I've been consistently disappointed with this model, and today I finally decided that it probably wasn't "user error" on my part. My smoker always seemed to take hours longer than it should have to cook, resulting in several delayed or scrapped meals (including on Christmas and a brisket that came out completely dry -- and I've smoked many briskets successfully in my previous Masterbuilt smoker). For example, a pork shoulder that should have taken 12-15 hours would take 26-28 hours. My guess is that the unit wasn't getting as hot as indicated.Yesterday the control unit stopped working mid-cook -- the temperature setting dropped by about 100 degrees without me touching it, I couldn't adjust the temperature any more, and it would turn off completely when I tried to change anything. I had to transfer the meat to my regular oven, and there was less smoke flavor than I would have expected after all the wood I'd burned in it up to that point. It always mystified me that the controller on this unit required you to set a timer for it to work. This feature is not something I ever used or wanted … and if I needed a timer, I would have just used my phone. Since this unit worked so slow, and the timer only went to 24 hours, I ran into several situations where the timer ran out and it turned off in the middle of a cook, further delaying an already slow process.I used to have a similar but simpler earlier version of this model, without the cheap-feeling plug-in control unit on top. That older model was easy to use and reliable, and although I had to replace the heating unit after a few years, it kept working along until a door hinge snapped. These beginner smokers aren’t very solidly built. With this new model, besides that fact that it seemed to run colder than indicated, Masterbuilt made things needlessly complex, resulting in having more things that can break (or never work properly in the first place).

Nice smoker
So far so good. Did the burn in, and made an eye of round roast. Totally perfect. Smoker held constant temp within +/- 5 degrees.
