I would say it depends on how he is planning on using it. I fall in the large size (6ft 180), in the summer though I typically wear a medium because I am just wearing a t-shirt underneath. We sized it so you can comfortably wear a hoodie underneath, so if he normally wears a 2xl and wants to be able to wear it with a sweatshirt underneath a 2xl would work. If he wants to wear with just a thinner shirt an XL is probably the better choice. Thanks Robert WindRider

The zipper in your men’s jacket is correct. A lot of European jacket styles are on the opposite side. Some north face and Columbia jackets do as well. I like the jacket a lot and have gotten used to it.

A large would be a good size and would still leave some room for layering.

Height/chest is typically. Small is 5'4-5'8 | 36-38" chest Medium is: 5'8"-6ft | 38-40" chest. From there it depends on if you want to layer underneath. For example, I am 6ft 180 and depending on the weather I wear a medium or a large. If it is late fall and I want to layer more, I wear a large, during the summer, late spring, I wear a medium as I just wear either a T-shirt or a single layer underneath. Thanks Robert WindRider
